Wont idle running rich.

Ive recently done a valve adjustment on my bike thinking it would fix this problem.  Well it didn't =(  When i start the bike and let it warm up for 2 mins or so with the choke on.  I turn it off and it stalls but not always.  Anyway i keep it running by giving it alittle throttle at all times.  Anytime i get to a stop or slow down it will stall out on me if i dont give it some throttle. SOMETIMES after i been riding it for about 10 mins or more it wont stall it will drop down to about 900 rpms then slowly raise up to 1200 rpms then at the next stop it will stall all together again.  It sputters at times and i can smell the gas when i ride so i know its running rich.  Ive pulled the tank off and drained it, had abit of water in it replaced the gas did the same with the carb bowls.  sprayed some carb clean in the carb and for the first few mins it ran like it was brand new then started again.  Im stumped could anyone maybe suggest what i should try next, its a 05 and has 14k miles on it.  I recently replaced the spark plugs also. oh and erm i havent replace the air filter in about 10k miles i keep forgetting!

Try running it without the air filter. If it runs better, its rich.
The 05's dont have my old slam dunk solution of floats going high ... unless some clown set them badly.

It isnt going to damage anything running without the filter is it?

Not in the time you're testing it. Few rides etc etc will be OK. Heck the K&N lunch box is plenty dirty and I've run it for 40K.

alright ill take the thing out and ride it for about 5 mins
