Hi everyone,
Been lurking on the site for a while and have picked up some great information but still need a little help.

Ive been working on a friends 04' 500f and only has 3400 +/- miles, the bike had been sitting for about two years and the PO only put about 140 miles on it in that time. It wouldnt run without at least 1/4 choke but was fine at highway speeds with no choke. I pulled the carbs and cleaned the jets and checked for any other trash, there was a noticeable increase in power and eliminated the 1-4k rpm surges we were having.
So now the problem is:
The bike now will idle with no choke but ive had to adjust the trottle cables to hold idle at 1200, Ive had to take out so much slack from the cable it now sticks. I understand that there should be a little play in the throttle grip and should snap shut quickly which it does do when the tension is removed from the cable lines. The idle adjustment screw is about 1/8 inch away from the stop when adjusted all the way in. The mixture screws are 1 turn out currently but i havent noticed any bogging or hanging rpms from blipping the throttle.

Am I missing something? seems as though if i could adjust the idle screw enough i could take the tension out of the throttle lines and then there would be no problems.

Thanks

True - there should be enough freeplay that the engine rpm does not change at all when turning the handlebars from full lock left to full lock right. Once released, the throttle should snap closed.

Are you sure you are adjusting the correct idle screw? From your description, I get the impression that you may be mistakenly adjusting the carb balance screws. This picture (from Kerry) should speak for itself:

Its definatly the idle adjustment screw, I also had to drill and remove the caps for the mixture screws so no mixup there. I guess a better question is; has anyone had to replace the idle screw with a longer one or had to "shim" the stop to hold idle at 1200?

Also; what does screw #68 do? im guessing its for carb sync.
