Hello,

This is my first post! WOOT WOOT

I got a 2004 GS500F, runs great.  My highbeam doen't work all of a sudden.  The light is getting power because low beam works but when I hit the highbeam switch the haligan buld just goes dark.  I took it to cycle specitiles and they think there is a short in my switch( on handle bars).

Has anyone had this problem or can point me in the direction to get it figured out.

well I kinda lead them in the wrong direction. At first I thought the smaller light bulb at the bottom was my high beam. When in fact its just a running light. So I ordered that part and it didn't change anything.  When I when back, someone came out and said because the top bulb (halogen headlight) was getting power that there is a short somewhere.

So let me get this straight...

Driving in the dark, and my Headlight works and I can see about 8-10 feet in front of me. When I hit the hight beam switch, the blue indicator light pops on, but the Headlight turns off and the only thing on is my running light.

Do I need a new bulb or is there a short?

If the blue dash indicator lights up with the switch, then I'd say you'll probably solve your issue with a bulb because the circuit is working.  Other thing you can do to be 100% sure is to remove the 2 screws holding the headlight on and unplug it.  Get a test light and put it into the terminals one at a time while switching btwn hi/lo to be sure you're getting current.

Good luck.

Wait, you said you have a running light.  So it's not naked?  Well all should be the same except it'll probably be more than 2 screws to get to the light.  My only experience is with the naked bikes.

Nope not naked its a gs 500 F , F is for fairing lol.

I guess the real question is: is it possible for a bulb to light in low beam and not in high beam?

Because that don't make sense, to me, if a bulb does not light its out.  This bulb lights in 1 mode and not the other....

Only if you are in a country that uses the English language

The bulb contains 2 filiments, one for high beam one for low beam, the high beam has blown, the low beam is ok......replace the bulb and watch the problem dissapear. There is a very slight chance of their being an open circuit between the switch and the bulb or a bad connection on the back of the bulb.

ok dokey, ill get a new bulb and let ya kno how it goes.

Cycle Specitiles wanted me to do this first, but I kept telling them the bottom smaller bulb was my high beam . HAHA WOW was I wrong lol.

Is the plug on correctly don't ask but i put mine on wrong last night upgrading my head light and it was doing the exact same thing in fact in normal setting it was dimmer than the stock bulb.
ubolted everything and found I had somehow rotated the plug so that only 2 male prongs were in the plug. plut the plug on correctly and wow its bright now!

What's up Dave! It's Will, the guy you bought your bike from. The lower blueish light is a running light which I replaced with an LED. Your problem lies in main headlight bulb (upper and more yellow). As previously mentioned, it IS a dual filament (high beam/low beam). One of the filaments has gone out. All you have to do is buy a new bulb. I may actually have some left over that you can have from my other bikes. I responded to your email by the way also.

By the way, here is a very informative thread on replacing your LED bulbs which I had used. No need for it though, since I have already done all of yours :)
