Still Having Fuel Issues(Honda CRF Petcock)

Well I finally got the Honda CRF fuel valve on, got the lines uncrossed, and got my GS running again...for about 10 minutes. It died on me like it was out of fuel not to far from my house. Thankfully my new-ish neighbor rides and gave my bike and I a lift home after letting me use his tools to try and sort out what happened. Also, along the lines somewhere I lost the cushion to my gastank...sucks. I just ordered new lines, fuel filter, and the cushion from good ol bikebandit.com so I'll be replacing all the lines shortly. I was wondering though, could a dying battery give me these problems? I trickle charged mine recently and it was at 99% by the time I unhooked it(going by what the display on the charger said). Could it have a dead cell and just be reading 99% on the charger? Would the bike even start like that? Could this be why my bike is dying when I ride? Will they ever make a Sopranos movie? Thanks for the help everyone.

Go with what it "feel like" - running out of gas.

Tank vent? Easy to check - if it runs again when you pop the gas cap, that's your suspect.

Carb vent (hose from top Tee, should go up over airbox (or the memory of an airbox for you K&N fans), sometimes gets clogged with mud wasps, etc).

If you suspect the battery, go get a load test done at an auto parts store - charger won't really tell you good/bad, load test will - eliminate it as a suspect, at least, or find it's not up to snuff and change it out - but I doubt it's your problem unless you have a bunch else not working (ie, if the charging system is working, once the bike is running the battery can be pretty poor and the bike will normally run just fine.)

Did you remember to cap the vacuum port for the old petcock on the carbs?

Just with a vacuum cap...get at any auto parts store.  They are the black things on the diaphragm covers on top of the carbs.  I think it's on the left carb...wherever you took the petcock vacuum hose off of though don't trust my memory :icon_razz:

The nipple you need to plug is on the left carb. It's on the right side of the carb and it points to the right. It's near the top of the carb and it's aluminum.

Like lilbill said, it had a hose going to your petcock, use a standard automotive vacuum cap to plug it.

I capped the vacuum plug on the carb and so far I havent had any more problems! Hopefully that will be the last of that. Now all I have to do is wait for my gas tank cushion to arrive and I should be in good shape for a while...knock on wood. Thanks so much for the help everybody, my GS would never be on the raod if it wasn;t for all of your help. :cheers:

Did you remember to open the upper petcock again? Managed to do a testrun twice already where I had to do that on the road... :oops:

You can ride without the cushion (may rattle a bit), or  you can fabricate a temporary or permanent expedient from a variety of things - old inner tube rubber, a section of hose, weatherstripping, etc...

Mine was gone from the time I got the bike until I somewhat reluctantly took it off the road to rip it open and sort some stuff out (when it stopped cranking on me) without waiting for winter as I originally planned.

Yes thankfully that was the one thing I seemed to do right. Lol. I ordered another cushion from  bikebandit already and it should be here in a week or two. I'm not touching anything else on that bike until I absolutely have to. It seems for now I'm in the clear and able to ride for more than a few minutes at a time. Now if only I had the time away from my girl to get on the damn thing!

Option zero (either way you need to): get her a properly fitting helmet and leathers.

Option 1 - ride two up

option 2 - get her her own bike.

Hey now, she may be scared to ride a motorcycle, but thats still ma woman!  :laugh:

don't push her to it man.  I was riding 2up when I got in my accident and she was injured worse than I was.  She wants to ride 2up with me again and I won't let her - I couldn't take her getting hurt again due to my mistake.  It's too dangerous on a bike IMO.

I actually agree. I'm not that experienced of a rider so riding with that mush extra weight(no she's not a fatty) on it doesnt seem like a good idea to me. I'd rather her ride mine a bit and have her get a Ninja 250 or something.
