Bringing my Corgi to Work on a GS500E

Yo,

I'm a new rider, a new GS500E owner, and a new poster. Bear that in mind should I begin to make remarkably unseasoned comments. Greetings!

I rode my bike 22 miles to work for the first time this morning alongside a couple of coworkers. It was my third time on the highway, and I'm finally starting to trust the machine enough not to use a death grip on the handles above 50 MPH.

It dawns on me that I'd be into riding my bike to work a lot more often if I could somehow bring my dog, a 38.5 pound Pembroke Welsh Corgi, with me. I'm not keen on the idea of buying a sidecar, and the pet crates I've seen for motorcycles are ludicrously expensive. Any ideas?

There's a local fella who uses a plastic milk crate. I don't know how it's attached ( I assume it IS attached) to his bike.  Dog looks to be under 20lbs though.
I've seen video of another fella; I think he was riding an older goldwing. He had some carpeting duct-taped to the tank and the dog kinda gripped that carpet for dear life with his claws.  I dunno-- how much do you love your dog?

...yeah, I wouldn't want to do that.

Welcome to the board though! Enjoy your GS!  :thumb:

There's a guy round here who rides a HD I think and he has his dog (a cattle dog) sit in front of him on the tank somehow. He must have a tank cover and the dog wears goggles! They have just made it illegal here in our part of Australia to carry a dog on a motorbike. The only exception is farm dogs.

Put him under some bungee netting and you'll increase your visibility to the PETA crowd.  Strap the netting down tight, loud dogs save lives.

BAD IDEA....

Dogs jump out of cars/trucks on highways. Don't let yours.

I saw a fellow on an R1200GS with a cage built on the back of it.  It was obviously a custom job - enclosed on all sides, and it bolted where a top case would go.

I wouldn't do it.  A passenger in full gear who can assume responsbility is one thing.  A dog that can't comprehend the danger posed by cars and the other hazards you come across by biking, with no protection - I wouldn't go there.

Its a valid point but the same applies to a dog in a car without a seat belt.
I bet the dog would love it!
I have a friend who takes his dog skydiving(tandem, in its own harness). Eventually the animal rights crowd heard about it and tried to stop him, said "How can you know the dog likes it?"  :icon_rolleyes: He got them to come to the hangar, put the dog's harness on the ground and went and got his own rig. The dog jumped into its harness, and went absolutely nuts when he tried to get in the plane without it!

If you strapped a milk crate on the pillion seat it weighs less than carrying a pilllion, the dog's not going to jump out if it has 1/2 a brain, if it does jump get a better dog

ohgood

i wouldn't put a 40 lb dog in a insecure cage. that's allot of weight.

i've seen people carry dogs on bikes, seems kinda chancy to me. cagers do it all the time. can't understand why it isn't a ticketable offense.

Only the most obediant dog could be trusted. I take my border collie (retired working dog now) but she is obediant as sin, if she put a toe out of line she would know she wouldn't be trusted again. She rides on the back of my quad all the time if i take her to work. I also know a guy who featured on our news over here a couple of days ago who had a working collie and a microlight! she would sit behind him on the microlight which he used to maintain a watch on his flock. All he had to do was spot a problem with any animal land in teh field she would jump out and go to work then hop back on! Amazing.

Dogs can be trusted. But i wouldn't trust them on a motorbike going anywhere other than off the road. Too dangerous for you or the dog. Also in the car the dog should always be in the boot, if its a small dog then you need a guard too so the dog cant jump into the back seats if its small enough to get over the headrests and stuff.

You're absolutely right.
The Queen has corgis, and you never see her carrying them on a bike.

That'd be tex and bundy, it's on a busa. Bundy has goggles and a leather jacket.

Thanks for all the ideas so far. A friend came with the idea of asking a friend to make something like a Doggie Bjorn backpack to haul the pup around (and some riding goggles). I kind of like that idea even though it's a lot of work.

For what it's worth, there is no way in hell I'd expect my dog to sit on the seat or on a milk crate for even a short ride.

That sounds like him. Does he ride around the Northern Beaches?

When we were in Vietnam at Christmas time, we saw a guy riding a bike with a cage full of dogs on the back. Maybe he was just taking them for a ride to the park....but I don't think so.

He could do, he rides every where with his dog.

That guy in Vietnam would have been heading home with the groceries.

Theres a guy in town who rides a 250 nighthawk.  He has his huge black lab ride on the back sitting up and its paws are on the his shoulders.  Its the funniest shaZam! ive ever seen.  I wouldnt do it though.  Id feel horrible if the dog got killed.  Thats why i have a jeep cherokee with the rear seat folded down.
