so i have a 1990 GS.... and with my infred probe it was telling me 305 on the head O_O

now im not the greatest with engines (i can keep em running and tool around some) but that seems REALLY high to me....

now i live in california and it was around 102 when i took that temp....

but should i be looking into an oil cooler or something?

maybe an electric fan? (can the bikes system take a fan? or will it draw too much?)



and my buddie had a 1992 GS (his first bike) he put 2000 miles on it (i told him to take his MSF first) and dropped it....


now he's parting it out... i might buy it from him and fix it up as a TURBO!!!! Gs =-P

what about temp on a turbo GS??

and what kind of cooling would i have to look into?

i've been doing alot of research and every one i've seen so far is air cooled no fans

uhm, well it's an air cooled engine. you've got a combustion chamber like, right there. it's around 500F or so (i guess) at the exhaust valves.

if you really want to see some odd temps, start looking at wheel bearings of cars at stoplights. you'll think twice about em going down the road ;)

aircooled engines run much hotter,  my corvair engine(air cooled 6) runs around 300 head temp on a track, sometimes more...

300 is a normal cylinder head temperature for an air cooled engine.  Actually, it's a little low.  350-375F would be closer to normal under a moderate to heavy load.

You're fine.  :)

However, because the GS relies on air moving over the engine to cool it, you don't want to sit in traffic for long periods of time.

I don't suggest installing a fan on the engine, as it can generate thermal stresses by creating warm and cold spots.  Unless the fan covers the whole front of the engine, certain areas will receive more cooling than others.
Every zero you add to the tolerance adds a zero to the price.

If the product "fails" will the product liability insurance pay for the "failure" until it turns 18?

Aluminium/magnesium alloys start to melt at around 1200F.......you have a long way to go yet, when the paint burns off its time to start worrying  :laugh:

More horsepower means more heat!
