Snaped key, no dup.  Was using nub end with other half inside.  Then stupidly tried to weld key so it could be copied, obviously that didnt go well. Now half the key is stuck in cap and cant open.  Are they removable when locked?  Have no idea what to do.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Cut a key with the 2 halves.
Or pick the lock, I do it all the time.
Cool.

picking the broken half out will be the easy / painless thing to do. not so painless (expensive) would be buying a new ignition, seat, and gas lock. removing all the screws to the gas lock won't allow it to open, the latch still holds it tight.

attempts at removing the broken key end will vary in difficulty according to how deep the upper end is and how snug its broken end is in the channels.  Maybe you could remove the tank, turn it up-side down and gently rap on the top of the lock with a poly-plastic hammer hoping teh key will bump out to the outer end.  Using jeweler's saw blade with the teeth pointing back toward you is an old method for pick, but saw blade is hardened materia and breaks easy -- maybe compounding the troubles.  I dentists "root canal" pick is tougher and finer and could help.  If it is too difficult, seek a lock smith.

I have two solutions.  one is locksmith if you're opposed to a whole new lockset or just a new gas cap with key, OR choice 2, drill the lock out key be damned and replace the cap and lock.

unless you get the cap open, it IS NOT COMING OUT OF THE TANK without damaging your tank.
looking for a new vehicle again.
