Handlebar ends mirrors: how well do they work?

I could never see anything but my arm in the stock style mirrors. With bar end mirrors all I see is what's behind me. I also don't like how stock mirrors are useless when you're tucked. With bar ends i just move my head a little and can see behind me with out lifting my head up. No matter what mirrors i use I turn and look with my own eyes before any lane changes or turns anyways.

for what its worth I rocked the napoleons for a few seasons and did like the rear viewing capabilities but did not like the look as much as I thought I would and did NOT like how wide they made the bike. they added a solid 2 inches at least on either side. made it really hard to maneuver in small lanes. I just went to SV650 mirrors (gen1 I think.... the round ones) and have been really happy. I'm 6'0 and can see everything behind me, not just the shoulders like with the stock mirrors....

I see your point. I have clipons so it not a problem for me.

I had trouble seeing anything but elbows with the stock mirrors.  I installed Napoleon bar end mirrors on my '96 GS E even though it has the threaded discs welded inside the bars.  It was not a hard install if you have a Dremel.  Here is the post about how to put them on your bike.

I like the Napoleons.  Finally I could see what was behind me.  I did get some vibration at highway speeds which degraded the view in the mirror, but for me it was better to have a blurry view than just my elbows.  With the stock mirror I would have to remove my left hand from the bars and move my arm in front of me before I could see anything.
