Good job ... and good luck with that.
In 48K miles, I never had the shifter seal go ... lucky me I guess. But I'd imagine it will be showering you with oil, that chain running around will leave a black streak as you ride by.
Cool.

Typically those rubber seals have enough of an interference fit to hold themselves in place, but if the bore it goes in gets a coating of oil it may not stay in place. I'm a master Honda tech (cars) and we saw a ton of balancer shaft seals pop out of the block on Accords, and had a recall to install a retainer plate to prevent it.

You guys can be sure I will be keeping an eye on this sucker.  If it begins to creep out again, I will fashion a retainer for it.  A simple enough thing to do.

Retainer clip ... I'd stuff a huge ass spring on it and slide the cover back on and put the shift lever on it. I had to fit a spacer made from copper on my vulcan 750. That bike ... total POS. It was a decent enough bike, with 2 flaws ... which are fairly common and are literally death for it. Alternator coils or shift shaft sliding into the motor .... have to get the motor out to fix it.
Anyway, I made a cap for my shock and to get the wiper seal fitted in it, I had to machine a retaining clip groove in it about the size of your little finger. Man did my machinist have to clean his glasses.
Anyway, good luck with this one.

Hi Nikki....

Thanks for the post.  Well the problem was a bad head gasket and they also noticed that the valves needed adjusting.  I got the bike back a week ago, the bike was running better than ever.  I decided to put a ride together with a couple of friends and when I hit highway speeds in 6th gear at 5500 rpm's and 65 mph the bike would all of a sudden seem to go into neutral, the rpm's would spike up to 7000 and then it would catch back into gear again.  To say the least it scared the hell out of me being a newbie.

Guess what???? Its back at the dealership.

Been in the repair shop more days than I have ridden it.

I think I will put this piece of junk up for sale.

OMG wtf is this.  I have the same problem as well.  I have an 08 that is also leaking oil in the same exact area you are talking about.  Wow. The dealer is going to fix it for me this thursday but i dont really like the fact they have to put a gasget on there.  Freaking factory people according to the dealer.. didnt put it together right.  Man i am really dissappointed that it  looks like an issue for the 08 gs 500f.   WEAK..
