My friend Bob and I took a long ride (300 miles) today in rugged northwestern Oklahoma.  Lots of hills, few trees (mostly in draws or along creeks), and beautiful scenery.  The weather was perfect -- sunny, clear, and upper 80s to low 90s F.

We left about 9:40 AM.  Our first stop was the Wachita Battlefield National Historic Site, where Lt. Col. Custer (yes, that Custer) led an attack on a sleeping Cheyenne camp on a snowy November morning in 1868.  The Battle of Wachita River or Black Kettle Massacre (as it is known to the Cheyenne, after Chief Black Kettle) resulted in the deaths of less than twenty Cheyenne braves, about twenty women and children, and 21 US soldiers.  After the village was routed, the soldiers slaughtered 800 horses, which they left to rot.

Here's me and my 1998 GS500E in front of the battle site (trees line the actual Waoh my goodnessa River, where Black Kettle had his camp):

The Visitor's Center is less than a year old and is very nice.  We spent a few minutes inside checking out the displays, then hit the road again.  Next, we headed north to Shattuck, Oklahoma, a small town with a very cool display of restored pioneer-era windmills.  Of course, in Oklahoma, pioneer era is late 1890s to 1910 or so.

My GS in front of the windmill museum:

More windmills:

An old dugout hut in the same museum:

Next we headed east toward Woodward, OK and had some lunch before hitting some more hills.  Here is a highway near Waynoka, OK (site of an annual rattlesnake roundup):

Another view of buttes in the same area:

We got home about 5:00 PM after some great riding and some great scenery.  Not bad for a part of the country that is relatively flat!

It was fun, really!  Not like the Ozarks, but pretty good for a Sunday ride.  Not a place I'd trailer to...

Or some rain.  It has been really dry here for the last three weeks and 90F or above every day.
