using the choke

I have noticed while warming up the bike with the choke on it will eventually be idling around 3k but still not be warm enough to hold idle without the choke. I have been adjusting the choke lever very slightly to let it warm up around 1500 rpm. Is it ok to use partial choke to keep the rpm's down or should i just let it sit at 3k ?
Thanks.

when I put my choke on, it revs to 4000. after a few mins of this, when I take it off, its at 1200.

I believe thats what you want your idle at, 1200 rpm.

It should not idle at 3000, thats way to high!

right, once it is warmed up it idles perfectly at 1200 with no choke. I was wandering if it is ok to let it warm up at 1500 by using partial choke or if i should let it warm up with full choke at 3000.

From your response I gather that 3000rpm with the choke on is normal but I just want to make sure because it sounds a little high.
Thanks.

Yea, 3000 with full choke is fine.
Not sure bout using half choke... not sure y u would want to do that.

The choke is variable position - start it will full choke, and then bring back the choke until it's warming up nicely.   As it warms up, you may want to pull back the choke some more (there is a reason that it's not an on/off switch). If your bike backfires or feels "luggy" when you first take off, you were running too rich (less choke next time).

Occasionally I will find that mine will want me to start riding with partial choke on - after I get going for a block or two, pull off the choke and she's happy for the rest of the ride.

My bike does a similar thing. I usually just fiddle with the choke until it is idling around 1200 to 1500 and warm it up that way. I actually get the bike to idle fastest at around half choke. I think this is a totally fine behavior.

I start mine on full choke it idles up to 4k, after 10-15 seconds I use partial choke to bring it down to 2500-3000. As I'm putting my gear on it gradually idles up close to 4000. I just keep lowering the choke a little at a time, keeping it around 2500-3000 rpm, until choke is all the way off. Sometime I take of before choke is fully off. Down the road a few blocks I just take the choke all the way off.

I just don't like to hear my engine revving to 4k with no load for a long time. Probably doesn't hurt it but I don't like it.

awesome thanks for all the advice, sounds like either way (full or partial choke) is just fine. I think i prefer partial because, as previously mentioned, I just don't like the rpm's that high while its just sitting.
Plus I warm it up about 10 feet from my neighbors bedroom window so they probably appreciate it too. :)
