I've got some cam bearing caps that broke in two when I took the cams off. I'm looking for a replacement set, all four, or scrounge around whoever has extras laying around from old engine builds/spares.

I don't know if this is a good idea or not... will take feedback if you have it.

I wonder if the slight difference from wear will be noticeable. I have noticed in the past if i get the cam bearing caps out of order, the cam will generally be tighter (with no valvetrain installed)

I don't know how an unfamiliar set will be on this one - but i imagine they may need to be resized. How? I'm hoping my machinist can answer that, since the camshaft bearings are just aluminum. On connecting rods, typically the halves are milled down, and then the hole is remade circular with a honing mandrel... The process works good in steel, but aluminum is another question - in my experience, aluminum is non-honeable.(sp?)

Opinions? Anyone have caps? Or a cylinder head they want to throw at me?

TBH might be beter off sourcing a head, and swapping it out ( head and all)

The caps a line bored with the head. It is very rare to be able to mix caps from another head. Not something I would do.
Common sense in not very common.

that's what I figured... i'll probably just recycle the head. theres enough aluminum to make 25 bucks or so recycling,if i take the time to knock out the guides.

The Buddha

Here is the small aside to this point. I have tried a few other heads caps in place of ones that were missing.
As long as you swap a C cap for a C cap, its likely to get a useable set of caps. You can feel it and make sure you got no ridge. Its gotta feel like like its a smooth curve, and not feel like it has a ridge. Its still advisable to treat it like a break in item even after that, as well as avoid it when you can. Having said that ... I only have the touch and feel, no solid experience running it.
Cool.

Custom Blue

I have a complete head from a '97 500E  The cam/head cover has a cracked lobe where it bolts onto the head but it is not the cover from this head so that damage did not occur while on this good '97 head.  Message me if you'd like more info.  Thanks!
