Using LED`s for indicator lamps (oil,neutral,turn,gauge)?

Using LEDs for indicator lamps (oil,neutral,turnsignal...)?
What should I know before buying some LED`s and stuff?
Wich voltage and amps?

Anyone done that before?

This is kinda urgent as I am developing new digital tacho/idiotpanel for my project GSs... it all measures about 2,5" X 1"

Ok you should buy at least 4000mcd LED's with a viewing angle of about 30degrees.  if you buy one and put a resistor in series and just shove it into the socket for the old lamp you should be fine.  Current is defined by the LED mfgr.  

but for a normal LED it would be a 2v drop.  so you need to dop 12v with a resistor to run at ~ 20mA

so   R = V/I

R = 12/0.02 = 600ohm resistor.  now   20mA is a guess on what the LED will run at.  just check what you buy.  Ill be more than happy to help you out if you cant figure it out.

If you buy 12v LEDs, why do you need a resistor?

because 12V leds already have a resistor in them.

Oh and

V = I*R
E = I*R
U = I*R


they are all the same.
