Did my second chain clean and re-lube yesterday on an "08, a couple of hundred miles past due.  The chain appeared to still be clean and adequately lubed from the last time, there has been no rain to ride in so that probably helped.  I used a parts brush and a small pan of WD-40 to clean the chain and very little grime and dirt was to be found in the pan when done.  When that was mostly dry I took a short ride to warm the chain, the wiped it down and used BelRay Chain Lube to dose the side link joints real well.  Then I checked the alignment and free play -- it was straight as the road to H377 and had almost exactly 1" of vertical play, no adjustment needed.  So far, so good.
