I rather pay a starving college student for my logo / art / design stuff than pay a large company.. though i havent ruled it out but i rather give students first shot.

Staples has a service called Staples Design Services (SDS).  They've done some great work.  All you do is bring them a sketch of how you want it to look, any artwork needed for the job, and within 24-48 hours, voila.  You get a proof.  Set prices too.
