Hey all,

I need some help.

I have my bike stored outside in a tent. But i thought the fence would hold it down. The wind storm we had the other day was brutal and picked the tent up and threw it. The bike went for a bit of a ride.

I havent taken any pics of the damage but to summarize its mostly cosmetic.

- both mirrors broken off. one just the mirror, the other the arm so need left and right mirrors with arms
- right side of the handle bar is now bent up and the end of that handle is bent up so i need neew handle bars and new end on the bar. the rest is fine
- fairing with the suzuki written on it is cracked on the left side. The screws all round are all bent as well. so looking like im needing a new fairing.

thats it. other than some scrapes on the lights. heres the problem I don't know what i need exactly to order. I dont mind doing the labour now so its ready for spring.

I have found this

http://www.bikebandit.com/suzuki-motorcycle-gs500f-2006-under-cowling-gs500fk6/o/m9752sch509138
http://www.bikebandit.com/suzuki-motorcycle-gs500f-2006-under-cowling-installation-parts-gs500fk4-k5-k6/o/m9752sch510191

but i have had the fairing off before when I put ground lights in and it came off as one whole piece.... did I just miss a screw or are there ones with one piece? cuz I cant seem to find one. also the site is very confusing. I don't know which screws i need to fasten it etc....... or how many.... if anyone knows this bike maybe they can list what I need?

for the handle bar

http://www.bikebandit.com/suzuki-motorcycle-gs500f-2006-handlebar-model-k4-k5-k6/o/m9752sch508469

again which screws. Its only the bar and the right side has a thing on the end with a screw thats bent so I need only those pieces. Plus mirrors and arms.

Here's a pics of my bike before the damage....

Thanks a lot in advance.
I'm in Ontario Canada by the way so the closer the parts the better.
Though I found out that BikeBandit ships here for pretty cheap.

If you order from BikeBandit, try to confirm the shipping method they use. I think it's generally UPS, which means you will have to pay a ridiculous brokerage fee. If possible, try to use USPS or anything other than UPS.

edit: I should add that many of the parts you mentioned are inexpensive and can easily be bought used (e.g. mirrors, bars, etc). I would suggest that you post a "Wanted" ad in the For Sale section.

I am in Toronto...(York University Keele Campus)....ordered from BikeBandit 2 times....they ship to Canada via Fedex...theres no extra charges....shipping is $25 flat, so probably a good idea to get all you need at once and any other accessories

I'm looking for new handlebars too, but not the stock ones....either 89clipons, clubmans (if they work)....or SM2's (but too pricey)

WillR

Ya I just confirmed the fedex thing.

I have the money to order the parts but I just donno if they are 100% right?

what is the difference in the handlebars.. how can it change anything.. its jsut a bar?

vorBH

Honeslty I clicked on your links above, but they dont work...i mean they work....but they just go to the GS500F parts page where you still have to select the parts etc....maybe give me the part # or what not

click large image

let me know if that doesnt work...

im a bit lost because I took my fairing off to install a bunhca ground lights and it was one piece...... this one appears to be i two pieces.. so im not sure if its right, and now im not sure about the handlebars etc.. :S

again what was the diff between the stock bars and any other ones? just curious

thanks~

WillR

well now im scared...

first off .. the fairing is in two pieces.. i missed the black clips at the bottom last time.........

mirrors are mashed  http://www.thankstips.com/uploads/bike/mirrors.JPG     http://www.thankstips.com/uploads/bike/mirror.JPG
left fairings cracked  http://www.thankstips.com/uploads/bike/fairing_crack.JPG
handle bar is totally mashed  http://www.thankstips.com/uploads/bike/bar_close.JPG      http://www.thankstips.com/uploads/bike/bar_end.JPG

heres the scary part......

the gas tank or the frame is bent... i cant tell which!!!! if the tank just moved.. (which i fear isnt the problem) then i can replace that but the frame if its busted.. then... isnt the bike scrap?
check out these pics....
either the tank is moved to the right....     http://www.thankstips.com/uploads/bike/tank_frame1.JPG
or the frame has moved to the left....        http://www.thankstips.com/uploads/bike/bar_tank.JPG

http://www.thankstips.com/uploads/bike/bike_far.JPG

now the bike is in  tent against a fence.. i think it blew against the fence...... bounced off and fell on its right hand side..(hence the handle bar bend)
i would think that the bar would bend a lot more before the frame would give..  but i cant tell which is moved. the tank or the front fork....... it might be hard to tell in the pics.. but see if someone can help me out here.....
i dont know what it will be like until i ride it but i have to replace the handle bar and mirrors at least before trying... if its off centre it'll wobble wont it? ..... argh!@!

it'd be a shame to scrap this.... it was in great condition and only has 4000K on it :( !!!!!

fred

It is way more likely your tank is bent. I doubt the frame would bend before the tank would. Take the tank off and examine the bracket at the front of the tank. It seems most likely from your description that this bracket is bent or broken. If your worried about your forks being damaged, put the bike up on the center stand and put some wight on the back of the bike so that the front wheel is off the ground. Grab the forks near the axle and try the move the forks around. If there is any play at the steering head, things are not well...

I'd start by looking at these two things. Once you've done that, it should be more obvious what is wrong. I suspect you'll take the tank off and find that the bracket at the front is toast...

WillR

ok....

ill take the tank off... i was looking at it and couldnt really see where it comes off... want to get a manual for this thing...
but my hands were freeezing already so ill spend some time on just that tomorrow.....

I hope thats all it is..

here is a better pic to see more of the bike
http://www.thankstips.com/uploads/bike/bike_far2.JPG
with the handle bar and the tank/front being all wonky its hard to tell what is still straight!

Taking the tank off requires taking the side plastics off. You'll then see two bolts holding the back end of the tank on. Once those are off, the tank should swing up and you will be able to get it off. Don't forget to turn off the tank mounted petcock and disconnect your fuel lines when you do it...

ok

so i didnt take it off but I loosened the back bolts and knocked it bak over and it striaghtened out.....
retightened the bolls.. so it looks striaght now.. only thing is it does move at the top to the right about a half inch.. and back if you push it.... not sure if it was always like this or if its now cuz its warped....

least i know the bike as a whole is fine and its just the tank /bracket holding tank that appears to be warped... (tho straight now).

thanks for the tips. im going to order the parts i need and fix it up this month... taking all the pieces off the handle bar looks like it might be a bit of a pain in the ass.. :  =/
