GS500 Race bike info

GS500 Race bike info?? hey i was wondering if anybody could give me some info on race preping one of these bikes for the upcoming CRA season me and rob at Lithium Motorsports picked up a 1989 as our lil project for the year and was curious bout a few things so any info would be great, especailly if somebody could let me know where i can get a  set of woodcraft rearsets for it also

I've never done any racing, so I don't know what kind of specific things you may need to do. That being said, here is a general overview for the gs500.

I tell rob that everyday haha just joking. but i did call out to the guys at woodcraft this past afternoon and they are actually not making that rearset anymore and do not have any on hand.. so thats the dilema im kinda in ive been trying to see if anybody has a new set on hand or if they have a lighty used set they would be willing to get rid of.. and thanks for the info on mnsbr

They (Woodcraft CFM) aren't making the GS500 rearset any more?  Well crap, that means I got the last set, and can't get spares?!

Interesting, that forum says not to pull the counter balancer, others say you need to if spinning the bike up hard.  Are the people who advise not to failing to rebalance the crank after removing the CB?

Its not an issue of having the crank and rods balanced, although that helps dramatically if they balance it for your race RPM range. The counter balance is there to make up for the vibrations caused by having only two cylinders which fire ever other revolution. The counter balancer  basically makes the 2 cylinder bike operate like a four cylinder bike in terms of vibrations(or as close as possibe). I would never recommend removing it as the slight advantage of spinning it up usually makes the thing feel like a harley.

Talked to Woodcraft, if I can get 8 people to put up cash, they'll do another run, full sets with shifter and knuckle (so you can go gp shift if you want).  Unless someone's got a used set I can buy for spares, I'm in.

Have you observed many spun counter balancer bearings on raced motors?  That was the basis for the recommendations to yank the CB I've seen.

I have not spun the bearings on the CB yet, and most engines that I have seen gone are usually the result of pistons meeting valves. The way I look at it is, that if you toast the CB bearing journals, then you remove it and continue to use the case until the engine explodes itself. No reason to remove it untill it goes bad.

hmm im very interested in thst woodcraft order bc ive got 2 gs's here that could be race a prepped unless somebody wants to take the 89 off my hands haha, but yeah seewho else would also be willing to go in on the order and i shall do the same

Woodcraft didn't mention pricing when I asked, so I'm going to assume worst case MSRP.  If we can get 8 people ready to roll, I can try and negotiate lower, 20 would be ideal for getting a group buy discount as that's the minimum run Woodcraft needs to do.  Buy up the entire run without having to store it, and I bet there's room in the price.

hmmmm...aren't F2 rearsets pretty much a bolt on?  That'd make aftermarket F2 rearsets pretty simple.

I know CBR900 units are a near bolt on, but they lower the pegs while shoving them back, no good for track use.  Just bolting up doesn't make them right.
