So i just installed windows media player 10 for windows XP and purchased sonic cineplayer dvd decoder to play dvds but i get this message

C00D1167: A problem occurred with copyright protection
Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because a problem occurred while configuring copyright protection. You might encounter this error message for one of the following reasons:

Your DVD decoder software needs to be configured. If you have another DVD player program installed on your computer, play the DVD using that program, and then try playing the DVD in Windows Media Player again.
There was a problem configuring your video card. Restart your computer, and then try again.
A troubleshooter is available to help you solve this problem. To troubleshoot the problem, see the DVD Troubleshooter in Windows Help.

Note

To play DVDs, you must have a DVD-ROM drive and a software or hardware DVD decoder installed on your computer. If you do not have a compatible DVD decoder installed, DVD-related commands, options, and controls do not appear in the Player and you cannot play DVDs. By default, Windows does not include a DVD decoder. For more information about DVD decoders, see the DVD Support in Windows XP Web page at the Microsoft Web site.

Did your dvd deal come with a software CD? You might want to check there, otherwise you will have to find or buy a dvd decoder.

the first thing you need to do if this is a dvd you got from a store is set the region code on the drive.  If the duck you are trying to play is region code locked it won't play until you set that in the drive settings.

oh noz ! there are only 2-3 region sets allowed PER DRIVE ! you will be locked into that region setting when the sets are used up. this is a hardware setting, cannot be reversed. never set region codes for a single dvd !

that being said, never pay for a player either. VLC is THE player, for all media.

now, download vlc and go get your money back for the that other one.

Ahh i should have been more specific, if the drive was set for a region code and the DVD wouldn't play that is what i was talking about.  I have seen some drives, not recently though, come region code locked for not the US, so you have to go in a set it to 1 or no region and you are set.

And yeah VLC is great, except i have possibly the only computer i have ever seen that it explodes on  >:(
