Idle Racing

I did a search but nothing really popped at me.  I get some idle racing after coming to a stop.  When I let off the throttle, throttle snaps back revs drop from whatever to 3K and then the revs slowing start drifting down.  I can turn the idle adjust and that will bring it down, but then my idle is below 1k.

I double checked the throttle cable while I had the tank off and it isn't binding anywhere.  I also cleaned the outside of the carbs and stuff to get the gunk off of it  The only thing I can think of is that A.) the previous owner worked on the carbs and put the throttle springs on weird somehow or B.) The idle screw is messed up.

What do you guys think?  I know the PO said he tried a dynojet kit in it, but it ran worse for him, so he switched it back (Bone Stock btw, not the brightest bulb me thinks)

I mean it isn't really killing me but I would rather that I don't have to screw with it all the time. (Get it?  Screw with it?  HA I kill me!)

Mine had that problem and it was vacuum leak.  Like, no o-rings on the manifold, carbs not sitting right in the manifold, etc.  Did you check into that?

Make sure there are no cables binding like the throttle or choke, but it sounds like your running rich. Check your spark plugs to read them and buy new ones to replace any way. The stock are NGK DPR8EA-9 (4929) and just replace them, there $2.20 ea at autozone, have them look up the number, they got em or can get em. I went through about 30 plugs on the right cylinder last year due to a air/mix screw that was tightened too much. Most likely your floats are too high, it happens often. Check those and set to spec. If all else fails it could be your air/fuel mixture screws need to be tuned in to lean it out at idle if the PO had a jet kit on it. These screws only affect the carbs at idle and usually dont need adjusting ever if it has been set properly. Its not the idle screw with the knob, they are two tiny flat head screws on the underside of the carb, next to the spigot where you hook the tube for the float height check. They are capped with brass at the factory, but if someone installed a jet kit, they are probably not there and the screws are more than likely adjusted for that jet kit. I think 2 1/4 turns is stock on 89-02 , I think.

thanks I'll look into it.  The clutch cable was rubbed raw by the tank, so I replaced it.

I'll check the hose, but there's all new rubber there, all hose are new rubber, etc.

I was afraid it would be the carbs.  If it was a 4barrel edelbrock I would have no problem, lol.

carbs are very easy to clean and set. much info here to help, and have a clymer manual.
