im gonna hear some oh my goodness i know....but here goes...

i came over here to Iraq in September 2006 to work as a contractor.  i put my bike up at a friends house so he could look after it.  i ended up moving all my stuff to Tennessee from Virginia and my bike was set at a friends house.  the bad thing is that its never been started and i believe has been sitting on both wheels but im not for sure as i havent even been there since they put it there.   :dunno_white:

i planned on my mom or one of her friends would ride it for me since they know how or at the very least start it...but sadly that wasnt the case...

its been sitting with gas, oil, and all other fluids in it for atleast 2 years...possibly on both wheels, not sure if its been on the center stand or not but i'll find out.

my question is....what are the big things i need to look for as i want to get it out and get it running during the week i'll be there next month??  is it possible to get it done in a couple days or at the most 5 days??
would i need to take it to a mechanic for anything or should most stuff such as oil change, draining the gas tank, lubing the chain, cleaning the carbs be something i could do with the manual?
im not very mechanical inclined, im a computer guy but my mom and some of her friends are.

what kind of project am i looking at to get this bike running while im home???

thanks guys

i would drain tank and clean carbs before atempting to even roll it over.  otherwise you will just plug up the carbs even more by trying to suck varnish from the tank or fuel bowls.  and yes it should all me in a service manual.
**EDIT** just found this page for you
http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Restoration/Starting

you may not need to do all of it just check the stuff listed.

i found out its been in a garage on the kickstand the whole time...shouldnt have to worry about too much but i'll still go over that check list while im home and get stuff done.

my mom says she can give it an oil change and change the gas for me and will try the carbs when the manual comes in.   is it is very hard to do the carbs or will the manual be enough??

i havent done mine yet but from what i hear they are pretty straight forward.  But if you wanna mod your title put buddha need card help buddhas the man on carbs.

I found the carbs to be really straight forward. Mine was sitting for over a year. Gas, Oil all the good stuff.  I drained out all the gas and oil. Picked up some chem dip from a local shop for all my metal pieces of the carb and soaked them overnight. I put cheapo oil in the bike and ran it for 100 miles to break in the new rings (not required) and replaced tons of gaskets. Runs pretty good now, just took out the cheapo oil and put the good stuff back in.

My biggest concern was gas sitting and I even went through 2 cans of carb clean and an air compressor to the carbs just to make sure I got everything out of there.
