first post on here but have been looking at posts for awhile.  got a '92 in may '08 and rode all summer.  now that the weather is cold i wanted to do a few mods before it warms up; painting, wheel swap, change handle bars, dual headlights, etc

i've noticed the katana rear wheel swap and would like to do that.  the post about it says 98-02 wheel, but i thought i saw another post about it being 98 and up.  does anybody know if an 05 katana wheel will work/is the same as 98-02.  the deals are better on ebay for 05's than other years.  thanks!

05 rear wheels are the same. There were some other changes in 03 (front forks), hence 98-02, but not the rear wheel. I have looked up part numbers before regarding this.
Common sense in not very common.

ok so i've got my 05 katana wheel in and it was a tight squeeze to get the wheel and spacers between the swing arm forks.  One thing i did notice is that rear brake caliper is close to the spokes of the wheel.  it misses but not by much.  has anybody else noticed this or am i way off with the reassembly?

Just put a katana wheel from an 05 on my bike last night.  Just test fitting, I don't have a tire yet.  Fit just like the GS wheel, uses same axle and spacers.   :woohoo:

i put a 99 on mine and fits just like stock gs wheel but didnt have tires on it yet.

yeah i did a test fit last night with the '05 wheel and it went on.  just took a little prying of the swing arm to get it in. then it seemed ok.

what about the caliper, any luck mounting that to see how close it is to the spokes.

Hmm..I didn't have any problems fitting the wheel between my swingarm.  It slipped right in.

I had the caliper mounted.  It is close to the spokes, but it won't hit.  No problems there.

are you using the drive hub from the gs wheel?

yes.  my setup from left to right on the axle between the swing arm is:

gs left smaller spacer - gs drive hub - gs cushions - kat wheel -  gs longer spacer -  gs caliper bracket

i'll see if i can't mount everything up again and put a gauge between the caliper and the spoke to see how close they are.  it definately spun free but just looked a little too close.

It doesn't hit.  It's not too close.  :thumb:

Has nothing to do with the year.  Mine is a 95.

I guess there is a spacer on that side, but mine stays trapped in the hub so I never thought of it as a seperate spacer.  #10 on this schematic.

i put the wheel in again and this time i checked the gap with a feeler gauge.  there is about a 1/8" clearance with the caliper.  it looks like its a lot less but its difficult to see too.

Also I was able to fit the wheel without as much trouble as last time.

thanks for the help!
