How's it going?

So I don't have my gs500...yet.  I owned a red '92 for about a year to learn to ride, and now I'm on a Suzuki Boulevard M50.  I'm going to buy my gs back from the friend I sold it to.  The original plan was to leave it at my parents' beach house in Delaware.  Now after I found this site, I'm thinking of just tossing some money into the gs and having fun with it!

I've already got my k/n, exhaust, jets picked out.  Looking for misc parts here and there.

Just a few quick questions off the bat (couldn't find anything from searching).

On the rear shock swap, it is my understanding that the Katana 600 shock bolts right in, and just raises the rear seat a bit.  Are there any particular years I need to look at, or will any Kat600 rear shock work?

For replacing the front springs, I can just replace the springs (looking at the progressive springs), I don't have to replace forks right?

Any tire recommendations?  Right now it has stock tires, but I want to put something pretty sticky/aggressive on it.  Any thoughts?

Finally, my tach bounces.  While accelerating, it works fine, but then when the rpms drop, the tach bounces around until FINALLY resting where it should be.  Tach cable is tight, and I can't think of what else it might be.

That's all I can think of for now.  Once I get the bike back (in a few months) I'll be on here more often, looking up stuff and asking for help.  Thanks!

Might want to look into greasing the tach cable, might be binding and causing the bounce

Thanks,

Welcome!

For the kat shock, do a search, there are particular years you're looking for... You might even get Buddha to sell you a shock that would work..

For the front springs, look up Pablo's GS 500 page and read his directions for replacing the springs the lazy way. He did it without even taking the forks off the bike.

For tire recommendations, refer to the posts of GSJack, he knows more about tires than anyone else I've ever talked to, doubly so for tires for the GS.

Post pictures when you get the bike, it is always fun to see what other people's rides look like.

Ok, finally found a couple pics of the bike.

So I've been looking through a lot of the threads.  I'll need to do some more looking though.  Thought I had my tires picked out, but then I realized that they don't come in a 130 or 140.  As far as the rear shock, can anybody clarify this?  From what I've read, pretty much any year katana 600 or 750 rear shock can be used.  98+ kat 750 is supposedly the preferred shock I think.  Am I correct in what I've read or am I off base?

Thanks again guys!

Jim
