Gas leak from the drain pipe out of the air box (GS500F'04)

Hi,

I mistakenly put the petcock in the prime position for long and it ended up causing fuel to leak from the bike. Initially, I thought it just flooded the carbs and will go away, once I get the bike in ON position and run for a few miles but the problem is still there and I will appreciate any suggestions for this.

Today, I took out the ferring and found that the only gas leak is from the drain pipe that comes out of the air box. The petcock is in ON position, the choke is OFF and I rode the bike for few miles. The drain pipe has a tiny slit in it at the bottom where the gas comes out. It stops dripping after a while but ideally it should not drip. I checked around the bike (fuel hose, petcock, diaphragms etc) but I haven't found any other place where there is a leak. Does that indicate that the float needles are toasted because of the dirt from the bottom of the tank when I had put the petcock in the prime position? Else, do I let the bike run for sometime and the excess fuel will just be drained eventually.

Also, after letting the bike idle for 5-10 min, I realized another problem is that the engine rpm has gone down to 800  (ideally: 1200 rpm) and hence, I had to play a little with the idling screw below the carbs to get it back. Later on, when I took the bike for a small ride for 5-10 min, the engine rpm was not getting down to around 1200 rpms easily. So, I had brought the idling switch close to where it was and it seems to be fine now.

I will appreciate your suggestions in this regard.

Thanks.

Once the carbs overflow, some of the fuel can end up in the airbox.

I wouldn't worry too much about what's wrong with your bike until you get all of the gas out of the airbox.  That little hose with the slit is doing its job of draining liquid out.  You still probably have some fuel in there, and some saturated in your air filter too from leaving it on prime.  That's probably why your idle had issues.  Clean out your airbox, clean or replace your air filter and ride it.  I bet it clears up on its own.  If you end up with more fuel in your airbox after this then you have to address the carbs.

If the problem persists, you have probably got dirt in the float needle and will need to drain or clean the carbs. Try just draining first as that might fix it. Your idle problem is almost certainly related to the fuel overflow problem, fix that first then reset the idle.
