Can't get out the SHIM cause you can't move the bucket? or Can't get out the BUCKET cause you can't move it?

For a stuck bucket, After removing the Cams, just PULL straight 'up' with a pair or needle nose pliers. If that doesn't work, I think you'll have to introduce some sort of heat to loosen the bucket from the head.

A shim should pop out even if the bucket is stuck, just 'feel' around with a small screwdriver to find the slot.

BUT, a bucket that is so stuck it doesn't even spin = not good.
And a bucket that doesn't PULL out, even with plenty of force = very not good.

This may sound obvious, but I'm assuming the engine is at TDC compression or the nose of the cam is facing up, away from the shim. How does the engine run?

have you tried turning the nut where the stator is on the left side?  or turning the wheel while in gear?

A knocking noise eh... and you have had it apart?

Incorrect size rod bearings/worn journals?
Worn main bearings/journals?
Worn balance shaft bearings/journals?
Worn wrist pin/little end bearing?
Incorrect balance shaft timing?
Camshaft float?
Worn camshaft journal/housing?
Worn cam lobe?
Chipped or worn primary/secondary gear teeth?
Worn timing chain?
Mixed pistons/rods?

First thing you need to do is check the oil pressure, this will give you some indication of the overall condition of the engine.

Knocking, hmmm.   Had the head off.
Do you mean knocking as in a low octane gas knock  (engine timing, bad gas...)
Dang could be quite a few things.  :dunno_black:  Start from the basics, check all your timing marks.

How many miles on engine?
Did the engine knock before or after you put it back together?
What's compression on engine?  Do both compression and leakdown tests. Leakdown will tell you if you have any leakage past rings, valves, head gasket (spray soapy water around head gasket).

Without some basic info, it's like takin a shot in the dark.

Why did the old bearings fail? There is nearly always an underlying cause. When you replaced the bearings did you........?

Identify and use the correct size shells?.......... There are 4 to choose from
Check the running clearance with plastiguage?
Ensure the journal was within service limits and perfectly round without any high/low spots?
Ensure none of the oil galleries in the crank and cases were blocked?
