what filter does everyone use?

Hey guys,
I was reading the gstwin wiki about which oil filter/o-ring to buy...

I am considering to buy directly from the suzuki dealer so I know for sure the parts will be compatible... but it is probably more expensive... (wiki says HiFLO is popular)

Can I get some opinions on which filter to buy if I don't buy from the dealer... I've heard K&N kicking around..

Oh, and do all of the filters come with new o-rings?

Eh, I always go with dealer oil filters because they are easy to get. The dealer filter doesn't come with the o-ring, you have to order it separately.... Some of the other filters come with o-rings, some don't, so it is best to check.

I just use Fram, I know some people hate them, but easy to get at the auto parts store!

I used to use Hi-Flo and they were pretty good from what I could tell.  They're hard to find now though, since BikeBandit doesn't carry them anymore.  I'm going to use K&N from now on.

K&N isn't listed on the wiki :S I'm am totally relying on the wiki and other threads, its my first oil change..

Which one are you using?

Dont fall for it and pay for the name, manufacturers will push the hype but filters are all pretty much the same. I have never heard anyone in here complaining they have suffered any engine damage because they bought and used a particular brand of filter. Shop around and you will find the difference between OEM and branded is negligable but if cash is a big issue buy the cheapest filter you can find and use the money you have saved to buy a magnetic drain plug. The amount of shite they drag out is unbelievable.

I don't know what the one is now.  the PO did the most recent oil change right before I bought it, but I'm going to use this one for the next one coming up within a month or so.

They have the Hi-Flo filters plus even though they're on the other side of the world to me I find they can get parts delivered to me quicker than my local bike shops can get parts in and they're cheaper as well.

oh, and another thing, I am seeing a little leak from the engine and want to change the washer (I hope that is the only problem), these are pretty common to buy right?

I got the dimensions of the one I need from bikebandit and hoping ill be able to buy a one off from the local store lol

try advance auto parts, my local one carries the filter instock at all times, and it comes with the oring.

I'm using an OEM Suzuki filter I got at bikebandit, but that's because I was already placing an order.  Advance Auto Parts carries filters for our bike like Jeremy said, and I'll probably do that next time.

They also carry 15W-40 Shell Rotella T oil for $12.69/gallon.  I was just there this weekend and got some.  They also have Valvoline 10W-40 synthetic blend high mileage formula oil for $19/gallon.  I almost got that, it was a toss-up.  They also have 5W-40 Rotella synthetic for $23/gallon, but the 5W part keeps me from using it and there are cheaper options. (and I'm cheap, that's why I ride a GS!)

I use a factory filter... Its only paper but if something were to go wrong with the filter and what not suzuki will stand behind their filter. Example a guy with a hayabusa used a fram filter and the insides tore apart and messed up the motor real bad and the guy was screwed. Suzuki told him if he used a factory filter they would have fixed no charge

ditto. i like fram simply to piss off the people that think they know everything.

there are a few people on the intarweb that still try to perpetuate the 'FRAM SUCKS, IT WILL KILL YOUR ENGINE OMG ONOZ !" prophecy, but it's bullcrap. i've used fram (and whoever else had one close to the oil) for years, and hundreds of thousands of miles. no engine problems. get over the fram thing. it's bogus.

first off, this is hearsay, on the intarweb, and you should know better. this is such a load:

1) suzuki will stand behind it alright, they'll give you another filter. that's all.
2) ya, that happens - alot
3) he was screwed when he killed the engine, not when he installed a fram filter.
4) bull. complete and utter bull. suzuki isn't going to replace an engine simply because a suzuki filter was used. it's either warrantee work or it isn't.

now let's add "but he used a MobilONE filter" to the mix. people will be all huffy quick because it costs more. i've seen (personally, not some crap on the net) a mobilONE filter split at the seam between the threads and the body. that's the only filter i've ever seen fail. ever. likely thousands of oil changes, and hundreds of thousands of miles in my short 20+ years of driving/servicing my own. my car, my oil change, my driveway covered in oil. this wasn't a 500 hp monster race car, it was a toyota camry. there wasn't 4 million pounds of oil pressure, it was a product defect. period.

there are tons of quality checks from each manufacturer. they make MILLIONS of these things without problems/errors making it to the consumer. will i never buy another mobileONE filter/product because of it ? pfffft, that's dumb. i'll buy whatever is within arms reach at the store. it's a filter. just a filter.

I am telling the truth honest. I work at a suzuki shop and that is why we will not install any oil filter but suzuki or yamaha factory. You may not believe me but I tell no lie... suzuki rep was Greg Hansel I believe that I talked to and my service department talked to. Not "hearsay" on the web.

HiFlo HF133 @ $3.26/each. My local auto stores don't even carry the correct Fram, so I did a bulk order online of all the HiFlo air and oil filters that I'll need for the next 6 years.

mmm, ok. so , for my 13 year old gs- suzuki will cover my engine repairs if i just use their filters ? that's part of the point i was making. i should have been more clear. of course ford is going to push their filter, suzuki their own, honda, etc. can't blame em for it.

If a suzuki filter, fitted by a suzuki dealer, to a suzuki bike still under suzuki warranty failed and took out the engine I could half believe it

But the suggestion that suzuki will take full responsibilty for engine failure on any of their bikes of any age/condition if a OEM filter fitted by a DIY mechanic fails is impossible to believe.
