I think it would be easier for me to have a cigarrette lighter socket mod on my bike than carrying a portable jumpstarting kit.

I was thinking of hooking up a socket to the battery (directly) so i can not only run stuff off the lighter socket (radar detector / cell phone charger) but also use it as a jump starting mechanism.

Is this workable... I plan to have a socket attached to the battery (socket holder) and then make a long cable (about 10 feet but capable of being coiled up for compact storage with two end. One end goes to the bike the other goes to the car / truck or whatever..

volia.. instant battery jump start.

What do you think. I was thinking if I should break the side plastic and mount the socket holder into the side (with a cover to keep water from going in? Or should i Just run teh cables and locate it under the seat somewhere . The underseat storage is quite full at this moment with my tool kit, emergency first aid kit, original manual and emergency flashlight and stuff. But I guess I can squeeze a socket in somehow.

I need to do this fast, i cant have the battery die on me and be stuck without jumper cables.

The size of the wire would be much smaller for the adapter than what would be needed for jump starting the bike.

well my thoughts is that the amp's on the car battery is a lot higher and on a drained motorcycle battery shouldnt the flow of electrons charge it enough just to start it..

I remember starting the bike once by accidently touching the positive in first (plugging in that first instead of negative first). It sparked but that was enough to start the battery and keep teh bike running for a week before i got to jump start it again.

The lighter socket mod was one of my write-ups.  (Use the "Go To:" dropdown above and go to "Modification & How to".  Or, go to my home page - link below - and follow the "Accessory Power Outlet" link in the "Modifications" area.)

Now that I've said all that, my setup will NOT work as a jumper cable replacement.  Why?  The wires are way too thin, and won't carry the kind current that flows between two big batteries.  (Don't ask how I know this....)

About a year and a half ago I did a bunch of searches on the web for motorcycle jumper cables.  I came across one product that sounded a lot like what you're after, but I have long since lost the link.  If I remember right it used a cigarette lighter/adaptor cable arrangement, but I'll bet the wires they used were significantly thicker than the 18(?) gauge stuff I have on my bikes.

Not saying it can't be done - just that you will need to experiment a bit before arriving at the right combination of reliable cable thickness and small enough size to pack around.

I put a cigarette lighter type accessory socket on mine.  Hooked it up with short wires directly to the battery it just lies there under the seat near the battery.  I use it to charge my cell phone and to run a small air pump I carry.  The phone charger wire easily runs from under the seat to the phone in the tank bag. I remove the charger when not in use.

I just use regular car type jumper cables on the rare occasions I have to jump the bike.

Did you find time to ship that rear shock this week Manjul?  The oil has completely leaked out of mine and I'm bouncing along like a pogo stick.  Gotta find one pretty quick to put on it or park it.
