well i did it, i tore the carbs off and ripped them apart.  i took it to the suzuki dealer and they broke free those damn screws that even with the impact driver i was stripping.  i had one hell of a time find the right washers and bought three different #4 washers.  first i got 4mm washers which was my fault... then i went to the hardware store and bought #4 washers but the hole in the middle wasnt big enough to fit around the part of the needle where the C-clip is, so then i went back with the damn needle and bought plastic washers that fit perfectly.  then i went to the underside of the carb to change the jets.  the main and mid were the right size from what i ordered but the pilot was the wrong size.  i switched the main and mid and left the smaller pilot in there for now.  i put it all back together, clamped on the pod filter and after three turn on prime and with full choke she boomed to life.  warmed her up and reset the idle and there was no backfiring or nothing, just a nice new roar from the new air filter.  i turned the idle screws out 3 turns instead of 3.5 because of the fact i didnt have the newer, larger pilot jet in.  took it for a ride and now she roars when i goose it and purrs if i take it easy.  the bonus is the new pull i get from the bike when i do goose it.  i like it, the new sound will take a getting used to, but i am impressed and impressed i did it myself.  i learned a crap ton about bikes and carbs from doing this and recommend it to others.  PART NO. : 09491-62006 -> midmain 62.5 ; 09491-27007 -> mainjet 137.5 and the pilot like i said was wrong so dont order 09492-20004.  i have a stock bike except KN clamp on pod filter and the rejetting.  also if anyone knows the part no. for the correct #20 pilot jet for 2001 gs's please let me know.  good luck and it is easier than you think, but it is definitely advised to label all hoses and cables and have a friend help you cause the extra set of hands definitely helps.  thanks for everyones help.  oh yea, in a couple of weeks i am going to pull the plugs to see how she is burning, i will let everyone know then.
Whoo! Lets do it again, Rock 'n Roll

Congratulations!  It's amazing how simple it is when you actually get off the porch and do it, huh?

I have an 89' and did the RU-2970 thing (don't you love the sound of that filter?).  I left the 37.5 pilots and started with 122.5 jets.  I ended up at 135's and have a set of 140's ready to go in (this weekend).  I have been track testing at each jetting change and expect you are right on with the 137.5's.

Good job!

Awesome!  The pilot jet is the Mikuni bleed type #20, not sure on the part # though.  I should have specified the #4 nylon washer.....oh well good thing you brought the needles with you.  By the way V8Pinto he has a 2001 with stock exhaust if I remember right Lex?

there's a picture of it on www.bikebandit.com, don't know if you're familiar with the site, but i'll walk you through it. click on performance products, then click on carburators, then click on mikuni, and you can figure out the rest. (i don't think your stupid, don't take it that way, i just want to make it as easy a possible) hopefully the picture will look like your jet!  :)  if not, sorry.
