You'd think we make a lot of money paying that much in in taxes rigth? Nope we are right around $85K. You get to a certain point in life and it's punitive to make more money we cleared less this year than we did last year although we both got raises last year mine was 3.5% and hers was 5% Lump SSI withholdings health insurance and everything else on top of that and what we make a year isn't alot.

I remember whem I first moved to oklahoma 1989, minimum wage was 2.65/hr I have had lots of years that I have made less than what we paid in the last 4 or 5 years and it really pisses me off. I think I had a banner year in 1994 and made almost almost $14k

You think that's bad?  Try filing corporate tax returns.  Business should have owed 45k this year, but miraculously we showed a loss :icon_mrgreen:
Personally, I donated 5300 to various charities unsolicited and qualified for a few other tax breaks.  Total owed: Not a goddamn dime to the filthy fuchers.

natedawg120

yeah me and my wife owed a touch over 1100.  It stings esp when you dump another 2k on a rental house deposits and another 1k on new to me truck right before taxes are due.  Oh well, at least i still have a job to have to pay taxes.

hey now, not all of us "living off society" are socialist pricks........   :icon_mrgreen:  i'm collecting my unemployment and going to school full time. the wife is a stay at home mom. (kids are growing up fast. oldest daugter is 6 now. middle daughter will be 4 and start pre-school in august. the baby daughter will be 2 in october). because of our family size we qualify for foodstamps, medicaid and assistance with our utility bills.  just think of me when you pay some of that tax money BP, think of it as a temporary loan, i'll be a contributing member of society in the not too distant future.  :thumb:

Justin I said sponging you should know me better than that. Besides a chunk of yours right now is unemployment no? You paid the unemployment taxes when you were employed. I have been just steps away a couple of times in my life from needing help. I recieved 80 dollars a month in food stamps one time for a month when a Job I had been working layed everyone off and I had to take a job making less to keep the rent paid and the heat on during the winter it paid more than unemployment and I started to work faster than unemployment could kick in but it was temporary as soon as I found a job making more I took myself off the foodstamp program and moved on.

What pissed me off was the social worker telling me I was still elligible for $40 month and to go ahead and keep taking it when I made enough money to pay everything I needed to pay and keep food in the fridge.

actually ALL the money i've got coming in is unemployment money. well, i have done some odd jobs for a bit of change here and there. it's a crazy system in some ways really. i hate to see it abused myself, and i don't want to become one of those people. because i feel it's a necessary thing to have. it's nice really, in our society. a safty net if you will. i believe that's why it was originally designed. i agree, the social workers are weird in a lot of cases. when my mother was trying for disability and playing their game, she applied for assistance. the lady actually told my mom that if she divorced my step-dad, my mother and siblings would be eligible for more assistance.  >:(

being "young" still, (i'll be 28 this year), everyone keeps saying that this crisis will play into my favor. they just raised the PELL grant amount. i didn't realize they did that until yesterday. i filled out my FAFSA renewal for next quarter so it would be done, and my grant amount was $500 more than it was for the previous time i filled out my FAFSA. i've also been given a 2nd grant through the unemployment office. (workforce investment act). so, all of my tuition and books are paid i've just got to pay my "normal" bills now. the job market sucks. hopefully it picks up when my umemployment runs out and i can find something to hold us over until i'm done with school. once i have my associates, i'll have a better shot of landing a job in the field and at that time i'll decide if i need to continue my education.

Q.  And where do all those taxes go?

A.

Details here.

This is why I hated to write a check this week.  We owed quite a bit due to raises and income without withholding.  If more of it went to people who need help rather than multinational defense contractors, I'd be happier.

i've never had to pay in, yet. but i'm guessing i will soon enough. why is it that i have to pay tax on my unemployment compensation? didn't a portion of my tax money from when i was working go towards this? seems to me like i'm getting taxed twice for drawing unemployment benefits. maybe i'm misunderstanding this. i'm a young guy after all.

Jserio, you might want to be careful. I'm on unemployment right now and one thing the "instruction manual" said was you can not claim if you are in school more than part time.  Don't know if thats different in OH, but might want to keep a lid on it if so lol

Good luck to you!

And to the OP, my heart felt apologies.  My parents owe almost the same dollar amount due to inheriting some land after a family member died yet combined they make 55-60k!  Sometimes it just doesn't make sense to better yourself in this world. lol

i did some checking before i applied for college, because i read that in our manual as well. but there are exceptions. if i'm going for something the state deems worthy, it's okay, and they'll wave my work search requirement. i won't loose benefits either way. but if they don't approve of my schooling choice, i still have to make contact with a certain number of employers. they recently sent me form to fill out to check out all that stuff, they even held my pay for a few days during processing. haven't heard back, but my pay for the past two weeks got released today so i'm guessing all is well in that respect.

ok good, they are real picky about things so just wanted to make sure you didn't lose it because of that.  They held my first 2 weeks because my last employer used an outside payroll company to cut our checks so when I applied I put the name of my employer.  Well the sheet they have to fill out showing what I made came back with the payroll companies name on it and they declined my initial application!  It took 2 weeks for them to finally release it without even telling me!

yeah, they took longer on mine as well because my last check included un-used holiday pay. and when i filled out my app, they asked if i was getting holiday pay and i of course said no, because the holiday pay wasn't separate from my check it was right in with it and the check was still smaller than normal....anyways, i didn't think it mattered that part of my last check was holiday pay. but i guess it was.   :cookoo:

yeah I made the mistake of claiming a seperate vacation pay check even though it was all paid on my last check so I did get any unemployment on my first check!
