Hey guys,

I'm a K&N lunchbox kind of guy but I've got 3 GS's now and am working on putting one together with the stock airbox.  I've been at this thing for over an hour (it's 90 degrees in my garage ) and can't get the thing in without one side popping out or the airbox seal falling into the filter housing.
Any secret, magic tips or techniques would be GREATLY appreciated.  I'm on the verge of tossing this thing in favor of lunchbox.

Thnx

Edit:  Never mind.  Got out a hairdryer to heat up the boots and she slipped in.

Yeah, the stock airbox is a big pain. I have one GS with the stock airbox and one without and the one with the stock airbox drives me nuts every time I have to pull the carbs. It is easier to the the airbox and carbs on the bike together as a single unit than it is to get the airbox to go on the carbs once they're in place. I also always forget to take the petcock off and have to stop halfway through and take it off.

Fred,

Yesterday was rough as it's my first time messing with it.  It can be a PITA.  What worked was leaving the intake manifold boot clamps loose and then heat up the rubber boots on the airbox with a hairdryer to make them soft.  Sprayed some silicone on the boots too and wiggled things around a bit.  Slipped right in.  From the scratches on my airbox, I forgot to remove the petcock too.  Next time should go better.

Thanks, I feel better I'm not the only one.

Nope, you sure aren't the only one. I did carbs this weekend and hated it.

I picked up an idea from the Buddha that seems like a good one: remove the air filter element and stick your hand in the hole to spread the boots from the inside.  I haven't tried it yet but it makes sense.

That's one of those simple things you kick yourself about and say "why didn't I think of that" :technical:
