I have 42,000kms on my bike and so far, have taken in for service every 6000kms (4000 miles) to do the valve adjustment and carb sync (@ 12k).  My trustworthy mechanic told me today I'm wasting my money because with valve adjustments, I can go by doing them every 20,000kms.  All I need to do he said is change the oil/filter regularily and I'll be fine.  I'd feel uncompfortable not taking it in every 6k or even 12k from now on.... what do you guys think?

Barna, you should know that bike well enough that you will be able to hear or feel a problem. I am with your mechanic, just change the oil and keep it shining :thumb:

I have not replaced or swapped any valve shims on my bike yet, and it's got about 28,000 miles (~45,000 km) on it now.  The last time I checked the clearances, some of them were finally getting close to the service limits.

Also, I have only synchronized my carburetors twice.

I'm sure that results will vary with each bike, but if the mechanic that gave you his opinion was the same one who has been servicing your bike, I'd take his word for it!

Scratch helped me synch the carbs on my bike but when we got the tool on there, it really didn't need it.  My bike had 16,000 miles at the time
