Something on my chain

So my bike was sitting outside the other day and it rained pretty much the entire day, unfortunately I wasn't around and so didn't get a chance to cover it. I noticed a day or so later that there is now orange/brown gunk all over the chain, and am curious as to what this could possibly be. I haven't had a chance to try and clean it, pretty busy with my finals and everything this week

same thing happened to mine...Take some steel wool or some scotch brite and give a nice clean.

  Now - lube your dizam chain.  If you clean and lube it regularly, especially when it's raining, it won't rust like that.

Don't feel too bad, though, it's worse on BARF...

i have no experience with that, but would you really take steel wool to your chain? you'll leave a billion little fibers of steel in your chain. what damage that has been done is done by the rust already

as for cleaning/lubing, i always clean with wd40 and a rag/toothbrush to get all the crap off/WaterDisplacement (rust prevention), then lube with some chain lube every 300 miles.

thats a lie, i only clean it once every like 900 miles, but i lube the chain every 300

Yeah, that is pretty funny. If you haven't been lubing your chain or riding the bike much, this is what happens. You should just ride it in the rain, throw all that water right off the chain instead of letting it sit there.... I ride my GS every day and lube the chain as needed and no rust ever forms.... If I were you, I'd just WD-40 it, then lube it, then ride it a bunch. The rust will probably just wear off all by itself, no need for steel wool or any of that... Rust is so much weaker than steel, it won't stay around for long.
