do blocks need a resurfacing?

Hi All,

I picked up a rebuilt head and bored cylinders yesterday. Was going to work on puting everything back together when I realized that I forgot to ask a shop to check the block for warpage.

Do blocks lose their head-to-block surface flatness and need to be resurfaced often?

Is it the same with the block-to-crankcase surface? If the block-to-crankcase surface sometimes requires to be resurfaced, wouldn't that mean that the crankcase surface would require to be surfaced sometimes as well? Last thing I would be looking forward to is having to remove the crankcase from the frame and hauling it to a shop for resurfacing.

I don't have a straight edge to check for flatness of the block?  Is it something I can rent/bottow from places like NAPA? I don't even have to take it home - can check for the surface flatness right at the store.
