Exhaust suggestions?

I toyed with the idea last year of changing my exhaust and ran out of time/$$$ in my cross country move.  Now I've fixed up the bike (she was run over by a catering truck).  Now I use the GS a lot more and would like her to sound a bit better/deeper.  Sadly I cannot afford to purchse a brand new aftermarket exhaust but there is a motorcycle salvage yard not far from here.  Suggestions for a stock or aftermarket exhaust from another bike that I could possibly find on ebay or at the salvage yard?  I just would rather she sound as well as she runs, not a lawnmower with athsma.  Any and all suggestions welcome.

almost any can can be customized to fit GS500, if you have the right tools and skills.
go to the yard, see what you can find, google/youtube it to see if you like the sound/looks.

when you find one that you like just make it fit GS
in case you have any more questions:
A) SEARCH
B) ask here again

good luck

PS. stock pipe from another bike will probably NOT improve the sound (I had GSXR 2005 pipe installed and GS sounded the same as before)
I went with Leo Vince SBK bolt-on for GSXR and customized it to fit GS500

The low budget option is to open up (drill out or remove completely) the rear baffle on the stock can. Certainly makes it louder/deeper. I prefer the lawnmower (less attention from cops looking for an excuse) so I went the opposite way, but  I was definitely loud the other way. If jetted for it (dumb shaZam! prior owner didn't) it might even run OK, too. Mine runs fine with the stock jets and the awesome power of tomato soup. But it sounds like a lawnmower (albeit an angry lawnmower in the high range of RPMs.)

like kml said you can use pretty much anything.

Find an aftermarket canister.  Mark where the muffler needs to attach to your stock manifold.  Take both parts to the local muffler shop and they can make them fit quite easily.  Take cash and usually you can get a "deal" on welding.

If you're really looking for a deal you can buy a damaged aftermarket canister.  Drill out the rivets holding it together, pull the can apart and hacksaw off the damaged part of the can.  Reassemble, redrill and throw new rivets in.  Viola... shorter non-damaged can.

Here's my example.

i just bought a can from an r6 well the mid pipe was no where close to being right. so I took it to a muffler shop and well 15 bucks and its  on there it was a little long I got to take it in tomorrow to get it tweaked a little but ya. buy a can and have a mid pipe made.

heres the finished project 90 for the pipe 15 for the custom made mid pipe total cost 105 and it sounds great. real tight sound I prbabably could have done it cheaper if I would have just bought a can from ebay or something. something I thought about when I was putting it back togather was what if you cut the exhaust off and put a slash cut tip on there like a shorty pipe or something like that.

I can't complain.  About as good as a parallel twin can sound.  Alot like the yosh slipon clips on you can find on youtube.

yea I know its a little low but it works and it doesn't look to bad either but we couldn't get the pipe bent tight enough to get it up there but it really only sits about an inch lower than the stock did
