so after a few weeks of pain free riding i started my bike and was letting it warm up when i noticed that on full choke the idle was sitting around 1k and did not do its usual run for the redline, so i turned the choke off and the RPMs stayed around 1k ? then i smelled gas, i looked down and it was pouring out of my overflow, i killed it and let it sit for a few minutes and fired it back up and it didnt leak anymore gas out but when i put my finger over the overflow tube the rpms would climb and then the bike would stall (is that normal) i figured maybe a quick test drive to see how it was running and i couldnt even get out of the drive way it was kicking and sputtering like a mule

i put the stock jets in it and have the screws 2.5 turns out, both plugs are black as night, i'm guessing my floats are to high ?

fred

Yeah, your floats are too high or your float needles aren't doing the right thing. Of all the carb problems out there, this is an easy one to diagnose and fix...

Sorry man, aparently thats the same boat I'm in!  Can't get the floats set right or my float needle is leaking cause I have 1 carb leaking fuel into the airbox!

Don't forget the o-ring that seals the outside of the float needle seat.  I have had that problem on two bikes so far...

hold on... you said that AFTER you changed the jets you started having those problems??

what was the situation before? what jets did you have and how was the bike running (I assume that everything was well cause you said so; why did you change the jets then?)

are you sure that carbs are at fault and not YOU??
To me it sounds like you did something not right when rejetting, and now you're blaming a piece of engineering that serves everyone else quite well...
carbs are not EFI, but they get the job done quite OK...

anyways, a little more background on what was before problems appeared will surely help in troubleshooting,
good luck

What are you calling overflow ... if that is atmospheric vent, and that is the top T fitting from the 2 carbs toward the back then yes putting your finger on it will kill it.
If you have a gas overflow situation that goes away in a minute or 2 ... try shaking you bike on center stand in all directions ... see if it stops.
If that is the case, you have a sticking float seat needle and it could be stuck for many reasons including wear and burrs as well as deposits on the thing.

So, close vent and it dies = normal.
Seat not closing properly for some reason. Clean, lube, adjust, replace.

Oh, why adjust ... OK the smart engineers at suzuki have limited how much your needle can come out of the spigot. If it come out a lot, it can easily get cocked and jam and not close. That however assumes you have a properly set float to begin with. If you're high on float as in your fuel level is high your float seat needle already is most of the way out of the seat as the float sits in a bowl full and no more situation, and it drops a few mm and it will be far enough out that it can jam.
So, check float level. Top of the bowl and no more.
Then open and clean.

quick background on the jet situation, the guy i got the bike from said it had stage 3 jets in it and gave me the stock jets in a bag, when i first got it she ran like crap so i reinstalled the stock jets, after that it ran fine for a few weeks off short riding (gas station and back, i'm lacking the right gear so i don't go out on the highway ) this weekend i went to start it and the problem occurred i will be giving the carbs a check once this weekend and hoping something will look obvious, i'm still a little bit of a novice at this but at least i'm getting my hands dirty

did the owner also give you original needles? DJ kit uses some kind of aftermarket needles that have different shape than stock needles.

PO might also have drilled a holes in the vacuum slides (because this is what DJ recommends  :2guns:)
if he did, than you may want to find slides without holes in them (you have to talk to buddha - he may have some spare ones)

If I were you that's what I would do (revert to stock as much as possible with the exception to jets - I would use larger jets)

last thing: how is your tank (no rust inside?) and spark plugs (what color, overall condition)

good luck with troubleshooting  :thumb:

jetting won't cause gas to pour out of the carbs and you need to solve that first.  I agree with buddha and fred and paulcet and everyone else that already said it's probably a float problem.  Once you fix that...If you have an 89-00....

if you do decide follow kml's advice and go back to stock I have stock needles you can have.  I also have extra of both size dynojet slide restrictors.  These will allow you to return your slide holes back to stock sized.  That way you won't have to replace them.

or...

Since your bike is already "stage 3" I have the dynojet kit's instructions and all jets besides 134 if you want them.  All of this might help you dial in your jetting if the PO didn't give it to you.  All you would need is dynojet needles...which you already have installed.

You said you have a dynojet kit with but put stock jets in.  You can't mix and match because the jets are not really compatable.  The numbering system and shape of the jets are slightly different.   Pick one style and stick with it

I am almost certain DJ and mikuni mix and match can work ... I am on it when I get joystick's bike running ... How possible will it be to replicate ... dunno Time will tell ...
