Stupid people try to sell bikes - why ?

You've done it. (the buyer part) ...

Walked into someone's garage with them, only to see a busted bike, begging to be parted. You walk around it looking  for all the damage that is visible from 20 feet away, and find more. Sure, the frame isn't wadded into a 2x2x2 bail of frame, but the important things attached to it are toast.

plastics are rashed (who cares, but it's soooo freaking obvious man!)
pegs are bent
bar ends - gone
rear tire has obvious signs of burnouts
aftermarket exhaust (doh !)
AND HELLO THE FRONT WHEEL IS BENT "A LITTLE"

So you say something (trying to be nice) like "Did you just store it after you dropped it, you know, maybe you lost interest or something ?"

and they reply: "Oh it's never been down, I didn't drop it, my nephew knocked the blinker off while it was sitting in the garage."

A few seconds of uneasy silence while you pierce his unclean soul with a stare....

Then you walk away without saying anything. Bike's still running, as he jumped it off 5 minutes before you got there hoping you wouldn't notice the battery, tires, and plastics were all flat.

Stupid people... why do they try to sell bikes ? Why do they waste our time ? argh.

Whaaaa you been to buddha's garage lately ...
That is except for the lying part ... I'd go like ... you cant count on the tank being dinged as a sign this bike was down, the tank came from a bike I bought last year ... motor scratches dont mean this bike was down ... it has a motor from a lawn mower ... and the fork scratches dont meat it was down ... the fork came off a kat, and foot peg scratches dont mean the bike was down, the bike was chewed by a dog which ate the whole wiring harness ... and the frame is clean and scratch free ... so what you complaining about.

One time this clown asked me if the bike was down ... this was my 89 with 48 K miles and he had ridden it and seen the damage etc, but I mentioned to him it has a lot of non original parts ... and I told him, down atleast 8 times and 7 in my possession. I got hit by a car once too ... he just gaped so hard he dropped the cigarette out of is mouth.
He bought it and I saw him riding it too.

Sounds like you've been looking for a new bike...

At least you didn't get into it with one of those "I just got divorced / moved to Djbooti / my cat ate the phone so thats why the phone number didnt go through / I just need your name, address, social security & first born child to ship it to you from Ohio" Craigslist scams.  I've started having fun with them when I see those ads come up. You believe one was claiming to be an Army Lieutenant??  :2guns:

And the fact that people supposedly fall for all that too... geesh!

I'm of the opinion there's no such thing as a bike that hasn't been dropped at least once.  I haven't dropped my GS since I had it, but I bought it from someone who had given it bloody hell before I got it...if it could be rashed it was, tach housing looked like someone was driving nails with it, front fender looked like a wolverine had sex with it, tank dent, one bar end missing, engine covers used as jack stands.... maybe if I ever sell it I can say "Well, I haven't dropped it..."  You remember when you were a kid on your BMX bike, and you'd slide that back brake in your front yard, dump the bike on its side and run into the house?  I'm pretty sure thats what the PO did to mine.  The engine is strong, however....the rest is for me to learn with :)
