test secondary wires on coil

Is it possible to test the secondary wires from the coil if it is totally disconnected from the bike (ie the coil is in your hand)? I suspect my coils are junk and I have an extra set that I could test but I would like to know if an OHM meter can save me some trouble.

Haynes manual says:

primary winding resistance - 3 to 6 ohms

secondary                      -  18k to 30k ohms (with plug lead and cap)

" if the reading obtained is not within the range specified, it is likely the coil is defective. "

If withing those ranges, then the coil is pr'olly capable of proper operation .
