Power decrease since 1996.....WHY?

Okay.  Here is a site that states after 1996 the GS500E dropped 5 hp from 52 to 47.  I was wondering what did they change?  Can anybody out there confirm a power decrease?  Just curious.....  http://www.suzukicycles.org/GS-series/GS500E.shtml

Oh, and here is another site claiming the GS500F makes only 44hp.  I have worked on an '07 last summer and I noticed the addition of a trottle position sensor and some other stuff that I can't remeber what is or goes to.  Anyone wanna enlighten me?  Still curious.....  http://www.diseno-art.com/encyclopedia/vehicles/road/bikes/Suzuki_GS500F.html

it depends how and where you measure the HP numbers. If measured at the crank the numbers will be larger than when measured at the rear wheel. also different dynamometers can produce different results especially when the atmospheric condition varies.

also I don't think that GS500 could ever produce 52 HP!
look at this chart (taken from main gstwin page)  http://gstwin.com/dyno_run.htm

I think you'll find that it had 100% magic up until 96. Then they removed the magic. BUT, in 2006 they put the magic back again to 100% - that's what I heard somewhere on the internet so it must be true  ;)

seriously though, nothing changed that would have affected the power for the '97 model. Mister's response is the most accurate.

I read somewhere (sorry I can't find the quote to share) the same thing about earlier GS's  Something to do with the older bikes had less valves/pot which produced slightly more power  :dunno_white:

I must have missed the memo that the number of valves changed from model years '96 to '97. :dunno_white:  I don't smoke so wouldn't know about pot.

They down graded some parts (the gear position switch is a biggie) in 96. But the rest was not touched. But ... shouldn't affect power output.

Of course the GS that made 52hp, made so at the desk of the suzuki advertising director. Maybe in 96, they gave him a new desk. That new desk now absorbed the power for its own survival and then in 2006 it released the power.

Hmmmmm.....  Oh well.  I DO have an important (I think so anyway) thing to share:  My 1990 has almost 30,000 miles and needed a tune-up BADLY.  My dumbassed ex- friend has an '07 (the one I worked on last summer) bone stock and only about 3,000 miles at the time.  Mine has a Vance and Hines pipe that is kind-of crimped under the oil pan and a hi-flo air filter.  I wiegh 315, he wieghs 160.  We raced.  I won a distance of what we agreed to be 1/8 mile by about 5 lengths.  Would that be normal if ours made about the same horsepower stock?  I honestly don't think my worn out-assed engine with a damaged aftermarket pipe and upgraded fliter could do THAT without being peppier than his from the factory.  Waddayall think?  And I know his has a fairing which makes it heavier, but not by much.

From what I understand, rejet/pipe/filter gets about 5-7 hp (correct me if I'm wrong)... I don't think that would make too much of a difference.

Could it be that your ex-friend just sucks at racing?  There seem to be a lot of factors... when did you/he shift, who got the better start... I don't know much about drag racing but having watched about 1 hour of it on ESPN2, the guy with the better start almost always seems to win (unless he really screws up or his car blows up).

racing is based alot on riding skill.  So that is not an accurate gauge for which has more horsepower.

Yeah, butI am twice his weight, and have a worn out bike racing a new one.  And his dad and him drag race an old Dart.  He should know what he is doing.  Actually, I would be the less experienced racer.  More experienced rider, though.  So.....

Yea pipe and better to begin with - you have to give up a lot @ the start to cover that up.

Also a fairinged GS accelerates slower to 50, and 1/8th mile is all in that first 50 mph. You oughta try a mostly high speed longer distance race. 10-20 mile highway speed race.
