a few quick K and N lunchbox questions

ok so i have heard a lot about the k and n lunchbox and have decided that i would like to get one but i would like a few questions answered before i make my purchase....

1. the part number RU-2970 when typed into the k and n site lists all gs500e models up to 2002 just curious as if it will fit my bike which is a 2006 gs500f.

2. i have my bike jetted as follows pilot 20 mid 62.5 main 142.5 since i have a k and n drop-in (with the restrictor removed) and the yoshi slip on. on the wiki it suggests pilot 22.5 mid-main 65 main 147.5 washers 3 (M3/3 mm, not #4) turns out 2.5 but this was done with a full jardine which i would assume would have much more airflow than my yosh slip on.  wondering if it would be slightly rich or not i know that it runs perfect now with just the k and n drop in and performance exhaust suggestions but i just want to be sure.

3. how much louder and deeper does this thing make the gs sound? i thought it finally sounded decent with my yosh and the low volume insert out but if this makes it even louder and deeper I'm all in...i love the sound of a loud twin  ;)

any responses would be greatly appreciated

1. it fits all models of GS500. I have it and it fits fine on my 04

2. you will be way top lean with 142.5. you need 147.5. I have just changed from DynoJet jets to mikuni and I have installed 147.5 and it runs perfect. I have stock header, collector and midpipe, only the muffler is aftermarket (Leo Vince). I think that there are no restrictors of any kind in stock pipes, and the only thing that restricts air flow is the muffler (I may be wrong though, but like I said my bike runs perfect with 20/65/147.5)

3. it is a lot louder than stock airbox. It produces nice growl that comes from underneath the tank - you're gonna love it when you first hear it, especially at WOT  :thumb:

cheers

edit: I changed the typo which showed 120/65/147.5 to 20/65/147.5. I wrote the original post after 2 large mojitos so I feel excused  :thumb:

jdecaire - I would run 135 with K&N filter in air box.

If you're running pipe then run 147.5 with lunch box.
If you dont have a pipe - stock pipe then with lunch box, I would not change a thing.

20/62.5 is a decent combo, I have had trouble finding 62.5's. The stock is 60 and 65 is the next size up.

No problem in your case, But post details of pipe, and it may be almost nothing needed.

i just have the yoshimura slip on everything else is stock, for the exhaust that is

if i install the lunch box would it be logical to just change the mains to 147.5? or should i also switch to 65 for the mid as well?

I'm actually not sure the exact sizing for the mid because i got a mechanic to do it last time and he could not find the 62.5's so I'm pretty sure he just drilled it out a bit i dunno tho  :dunno_black: it seems to work fine now...all i know is I'm re-jetting myself this time wayyyyyy too expensive to get someone else to do it

one other quick question that you or anyone can answer for me...i was just curious i really like loud pipes so i was wondering if unpacking my yoshimura slip on would do anything bad for the bike or exhaust system i believe packing is just there to make it quiet right? Ive seen you tube vids of people doing it to other bikes and it sounded really cool on them just wondering if it would be worth trying if it does cause any problems besides being obnoxiously loud :)

The packing burns up rather quickly. You wont gain much removing it.

The thing to do, assuming you have 62.5 is to run 147.5 and 2 washers under the needle leaving all else as is.

If you're lean on the midrange then try 65, but bear in mind, most bikes here work great with the stock 60 mids, 62.5 may be plenty.

I can put a mains only - and washers and bolts for the bowl kit for you for ~15 shipped to you. Let me know is you want that, or you can get em from a dealer too, but some deaers totally suck ...

i'll see what the dealer prices me at, its only a 2min drive from my place, but i'll definitely PM you about the mains kit if i decide to buy the lunch box..im just not sure how you do payment and such but aside from that thank you for the info very helpful!

IMO rejetting was a pain in the butt to do BUT it was well worth it. Also, replacing the stock airbox with the K&N lunchbox filter is not only a cheap and great power mod but it also frees up a nice bit of space.

Paypal, roll of small unmarked bills, handful of quarters, and beer ... yes the rumors are true, the buddha can be paid in beer.
Oh yea, I am also accepting speakers, but gotta be speakers that can drop into the low teens for hz and carry 100 watt rms, and 200 peak. Giant mofo's and I need a matched pair in 8 ohm. 15" + minimum.

agreed, I just installed mine last night, still have stock exhaust, I love the sound.  :kiss3:  Still validating the mix and whether or not there is any detectable HP gain....

I agree, my '89 is set the same way as EC and KML.KRK, the induction growl beats any so-called "race" pipe, and you can control the volume by revving it up (Friday night show off) or keeping it low down (Hello, officer!). I have the stock pipe but it doesn't sound that way, thanx to the K&N.

Unpacking the muffler will make it annoyingly loud and not really in a good way. I did that already and its just a little lower than running oper header... Got a repack kit from two brothers racing for $19 and only used half of it...

How long does packing usually last? I was wondering if I should try to repack my V&H while I have it off the bike to repaint the headers. Do they sell the stuff at auto stores, or do you usually do best to order it online?

The Buddha

You can repack it with fiberglass insulation for your house availavle @lowes/HD both of whom are my employers customers BTW ... booya.
You buy some fiber glass, and I get a penny - yea I wish.

Sounds good, just by a small roll and pull the pink stuff off of the paper?

Good luck with the pennys, Home Depot doesn't even give their employees a discount!

Figured i'd chime in w/ a question for everyone.  I also want to get this, but was wondering if most everyone buys directly from K&N online, or if they go through a dealer.  Just trying to figure out what's a better buy.  Looks like K&N online wants $35.  Anyone?
Proud owner of my first bike, 1990 GS500E!!!

I actually got mine from autozone I think $37 no shipping.... had to wait two days, so still cheaper.
