Will some aftermarket pads cure this?  I assume they would, and it would be worth the money to me....

I used a lot of rear brake til they were worn in and stopped squeaking. Short pads like the rears when thick tend to squeak, even worse was on my Honda rebel and fronts squeaked for the first couple few hundred miles til the brakes were broken in.

nemuro

I have the same problem, only the squeak came after they started to wore down.

What brands do you recommend for the brake pads? Maximum performance for the low coin.

Read this thread for my opinions, there have been many threads on GS500 rear brake squeal:

2 words.  Lithium grease.  It goes on the back side of the brake pad.  Mine squeaked like hell untill i put that on there.  Haven't made a peep since.

Bridger

Yeah, I always use lithium grease when I do brake jobs on cars.   I guess Suzuki can't afford a 'lil dab of grease on the back of the pads........ :icon_sad:

The pad has six sides. A top and a bottom, one that faces to the front of the bike, one to the back, one to the disk and one away from the disk.

When you say - dab of grease on the back of the pads - I picture a dab of grease on the side of the pad which faces the rear of the bike and don't see how that would help anything.

Would you clarify please where this grease it to be placed?

MOLYKOTE® M-77 PASTE or Honda M-77 Assembly Paste (same thing) A little on the back of the pads and that's the opposite side from the lining. I am going on two years with no squealing from one application. It's a paste that's thicker than grease, does not wash away  :thumb:

take an air hose and pull the plastic cap off the caliper and blow the dust out of there every so often and it takes care of it.

Bridger

Lol. No dust on my bike.  it was in the showroom last week.  I guess I will tear into the brakes and smear some grease on the back of the pads......

Not sure what's available in your neck of the woods but the auto dealership I work at here has a product called "Finishing Touch" by Auto Solutions.  It is an aerosol spray that is applied to the rotor, not the pads, so no dis-assembly is required.  When my girlfriend got her GS last year it squeaked really bad.  Tried that stuff on a whim and it hasn't squeaked since.

actually yea same here. kat wheel swap and an aftermarket brake rotor and no more squeaking for me either!

must be the brake rotor. i put in my ebc rear brake pads not too long ago. stopped the squeaking for maybe the first 50 or so miles and then it came back to haunt me. just did the katana wheel swap with a new brake rotor and that's it.

so the expensive solution would to look into an aftermarket brake rotor. i'm yet to try any of the grease solutions though. and that would probably be cheaper.   :dunno_white:

g'luck.

I'm no mechanic but it seems to me that putting grease on your brakes would be a bad thing. if its a new bike you just need to wear the pads in mine did that for a couple tanks of gas then it went away.

Bridger

Grease would go on the back of the pads.  Not a bad thing in any way, that's what normally is done when new pads are installed.  I just posted this because I was unsure if it was the piston or if it was cheap friction material that causes the squeaking.....

By the back of the pad i meant the side that the piston pushes against.  get it?

How can it be the rotor when both rotors are the same and it's only the rear that squeaks?  If it ain't confusing enough already, on my Yamaha only the front squeaks.  :dunno_white:

Grease helps for awhile but eventually washes away.
