GS500's with electronic tachs?

Apparently the 2003 GS500 had an electronic tach... my 2001 is mechanical. Anyone know about 2002's?

Anyone know if the '03 used a sending unit in place of the old style cable pick up in the cylinder head? If not, what did it use?

Just wondering how much trouble it would be to make an '03 tach work on my '01.

Electronic tachs don't use sending units. They just connect to the signal line to a coil, and count the firing pulses to the coil.

There is no reason an electronic tach off another bike won't work on the GS, as long as the firing pulses per rev are the same. Most bikes fire each coil each rev, the same as the GS, so almost anything will work. I have one off a RF900 I've been meaning to try. I use a Mychron 3 electronic tach on my race GS.

i bought a 2003 guage cluster and it had an electronic tach on it and a seperate wiring harness. the wiring harness had three wires and it went into a connector clip wich i imagine routed into the main wiring harness. i sold the tach under the impression that the 2001 and newer models had the electronic tachs. so now i'll be getting that back. my only mistake was trying to help out another guy(who bought the speedo), i gave him the wiring harness for the tach just in case he found a matching tach. bummer.

i have to get it back first, who knows when that'll be. the guy has yet to e-mail me back. who knows, he might be trying to make it work. i'll let you know.

Hey JasonB... I'm the one who bought the electronic (2003) tach from tmc008 (I've got a 2001). What year tach are you offering to trade? I'm looking for a mechanical one with the chrome ring that has a good face (non-faded or scratched).
