Let me rephrase that ... I am not a welder, I cant just look and see that it is this or that.
You have a rod welded in it at the point you cut it - the part that will be stronger, the parts just abobe and below the weld - the ones that got red hot, will be the weakest and it will be weaker than original.
Of course if the rod is like a bolt and you ahve it bolted under the lower triple then it will be stronger, the stem cannot tear wihtout breaking the rod. Harley's are built this was, they have stems that have a bolt at the bottom instead of being welded in like the kat ones, and those buggers are strong, cos the stems are solid. I am copying that in my raked set of triples for the savage.

you are of course right, it will be weaker over and under the weld, but only in the same degree as original strength, and it wont break all that easy anyway ;)

and the rod inside the stem, is also welded in the top and bottom, to insure that any twist or bends is applied evenly trough the stem, and thereby taking the stress away from the weld.
I had some help finding out how to do it by a custom Harley shop, he also told the thing with the rod inside the stem, it's also used on Yamaha Dragstar and the 1400cc Intruder, so it should be safe( I hope)..
but if you dont know how to weld, or know anyone who does, then the best way is to have it pressed, but i dont do anything the easy way :D

If that rear shock resevior was hitting either the air box or a lunch box, you might be able to try some K&N pods, then the resevior might just stick right between the two. I'm not sure how big of a gap there is between them.

With the lunchbox if I remember right you should have about 4-5 inches of clearance between the battery tray. Can anyone with a lunchbox confirm this?   :icon_confused:

their is room between the lunchbox and battery tray, alot more than with the stock airbox.  I will measure when i go out on lunch today i will open my seat and take a measurement.

I don't know that this fits into the rest of the conversation. I think I meant to post this in that thread about the 06-07 R6 shock. Sorry if that confused anyone.

Their is about 5 inches between where the battery box is and where the lunchbox air filter is.
