OK I am all for the Dremel but you are assuming there is power available there qwertydude

Take a furniture dolly or a skateboard and bungie it to the back wheel- Leave it in gear. It'll roll well enough for you to move it.
Take help for the truck part and just muscle it....

$300 for a non titled bike is a little high. Get a Bill of Sale to CYA...

Buy a titled frame ( after you get it running and  sure its all good..) and swap it over if you can't get a title.

Look up abandoned vehicle titles for your state....Here in MD it has to be 6 months ( I THINK )... You fill out a form with the dmv...send a registered letter to the last known registered owner...wait til it come s back undelivered  ( or they reply )...if no reply you post an add about the bike in  local paper (doesn't state which paper...so you can be creative...IE in papers that maybe not alot of people read..) for so many days...
If no reply I think you get it signed off to you.... Each state varies...

You may also ( if you know any Law Enforcement officers ) just get someone to run the vin for you and get the last know info and try to contact them...
Tell em they owe  storage on the bike or in lieu of that - get a title to you. Or some variation  of that....

When the 2nd Amendment is lost, the rest will soon follow.

the VIN number is posted......

what can you do to look it up?  Carfax???

I know in Ohio you can look up the vin on the bmv's website. You might want to check your states site.

I'd recommend taking the VIN to the local PD and asking them if it's stolen.

I wouldn't touch it, period. I got screwed over by an almost identical situation years ago. I bought an abandoned bike from landlord/friend that told me the bike had been left by a former tenant several months prior. Fast forward 2 months after I spent quite a bit of time working to get the bike roadworthy and about to go get it licensed and my so called friend calls me up to say the bikes former owner had showed up to pick up his bike, when he found it missing he called the police. I said that I had a bill of sale issued by the landlord for an abandoned vehicle, landlord denied it as he had been getting money from former owner for storing the bike.  Needless to say it was my word against his, the police gave me the benefit of the doubt and did not press charges but I was out the price of the bike AND the repairs I made. Since the bike was all fixed up the owner would not consider selling it to me either.

Thank you ... voice of reason!!!  I thought i was the only one here who thought this thread went the WRONG direction 300 bucks for a bike.  seriously!!  If there is nothing wrong with the bike... any smart person would legally own it by abandonment.... sell the bike for more that a measly 300 bucks!!!  Now if I ever wanted to steal a bike WHICH I WOULD NEVER DO... i sure as "not heaven" would know where to come if I needed to know how!!!

Just because he says it's not stolen... that's like a woman saying she came everytime she had sex with you... and we know that .... well take that how you want to!!!!

ha, nice, guys.

Anyway, decided against wasting my time driving into the city to struggle with this bike.  The guy is set on getting $300 for it.  I told him I'd come remove it for him for free... didn't think he'd go for it, and he didn't.  Too much of a hassle and danger.  O well..... I do have MY current GS up for sale though.... fully modded, slightly banged up from learning.... but still a decent ride with many extra parts.... new tires, brakes, oil..... $1700 obo

Everyone is suggesting the big guns yet I have never seen a lock that can survive a dremel wheel or two.

$20 angle grinder + $4 worth of abrasive wheel = no more lock. or no more fork. or no more tar. hell, nothing can withstand the powa of angle grinders besides chuck norris.

either way, someone is going to loose a bike soon.

Ditto. Read of one guy who had Hardened Steel Chain locked his bike to some pedestrian handrails things. In the morning the bike was gone, the handrail was not damaged. There was a pile of grinding metal. Ease as with a portable grinder.

There is also a vid on Youtube of a bike getting stolen in all of 20 seconds. Disk lock on the front. Minivan drives by at 15 seconds in, reverses and pulls up. Guy gets out, walks along the path to the bike. Van drives next to bike, another guy gets out and they lift the front into the van. Second guy then lifts the back in, hops in himself, and off the van drives. Vid goes for 4 minutes - but the actual theft-in-action is all of 20 seconds, the rest is the slow lead up to how the thieves Cased the bike http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D96QM-lzLM8

But a guy who supposedly Lost the key - and back up key - to a krypton lock. That's red flags raised to me.

For those of you wondering.. I ran a check on this VIN and it is not valid. So either the person trying to sell it on CL is an dyslexic idiot or the bike is stolen!

I'm not experienced with VIN's, but aren't M/C vins different than cage vins?  I could be completely wrong tho.

That VIN was missing a character.... seller got back to me with this one :

JS1GM51A2T2100384

anyone wanna pull a report or know where to get a free one?  I started the carfax process and got to "There are 2 records for this VIN" and I assumed that's a bad thing.... cuz all my other bike VINs only had 1 record

having a carfax that says it has 2 records doesn't necesarily mean a bad thing.  I could have just had 2 owners cause each title transfer i believe is 1 record.

how are you running the VIN? is there some free service you're using or do you have access through work or something?

I just visited my local PD.  They said that in order for me to check to see if a bike is stolen or not, I have to visit the RMV.  I would imagine it'd be the same in all the states.

You can run VIN's at several sites like http://www.vinquery.com/
http://www.autobaza.pl/

But in order to find out more info you must pay the scum sucking sites like carfax and autocheck. They can KMA!

It should be of public record and no scum bags should be making money off of it IMHO!
