I have been looking for a cheap slip-on-can (less than $130) for my 04' GS500F ...
I asked my Suzuki dealer today,
And he said a Hindle slip on is the way to go. But I haven't seen any evidence of them being supported for a 04' GS500F, even on the official Hindle site.
Yoshi slip on's cost a good $300 and that just sucks for only a new sound.
:O
Just looking to freshen up the experience of the GS for a few bucks, anyone got any suggestions for a GOOD slip on?

Ahaha, thanks for the reply ,
Does V & H fit on the GS500?  :dunno_white:
And the Yoshi's slip-ons are up there in the price range though . .. . .

I don't know if V&H makes a slipon. I have one on my bike but it's the full deal with the headers as well. As far as a new look/sound, it is a little skinnier than I care for, but i may someday try to make it a high mount, and I think the skinny size would work good for that, or an undertail for that matter. As far as sound goes, that thing is so god awful loud. It might be ok cruising around in loud areas or not around people, but I took it for a spin around my neighborhood last night, and I kinda felt like a jerk taking it over 4krpm at 11pm, but I was pretty anxious to try it out so I did it anyway.

Maybe you can find a cheap slipon from another bike with a similar diameter midpipe? I don't really know a lot about how the exhaust situation works, whether they're actually interchangable or not. I would assume they're not, but I know when I had my Triumph, I put a zx-6r exhaust on it and it worked fine.

Eh man , thanks for the reply.
I guess that takes out V & H, I live in a big subdivision and that would bring in alot of complaints from the neighbors.
Does anyone know what the mid-pipe diameter is? I think for the GS500, you have to buy a full mid-pipe anyway because of the retarded style of the exhaust.

you can fit just about any can on a GS.  The trick is getting someone to build and weld the mid-pipe for you.  I'd look on ebay for a used slip-on.  for the amount you're willing to pay you should be able to get a pretty nice yoshimura or V&H.

And then after removing the stock exhaust, and slipping on the aftermarket beast, you need a full new mid-pipe?
:icon_neutral:
Damn. I guess thats the only way to work it without paying huge bucks.
Thanks man

you might not need a new mid-pipe - it depends.  it might be as easy as butting the old one off right at the pipe and slipping the new can on and welding.

Yeah, knowing how to weld, or finding someone to weld it is pretty much the key.

What makes one pipe so much louder than another? I understand the difference between a stock and an after market exhaust, but why is my V&H so rediculously loud compaired to any other after market exhaust that's still just a straight through baffle?

Is there any way to make mine more quiet? Maybe by jamming more baffling in there? The stuff that's in there now isn't packed all that tight, and is a couple inches shorter than the actual exhaust.

My old bike had a D&D on it, it was awful as well. Sounded nice but SO loud. I never would've chose that exhaust to buy in the first place, but I came across it for a good price and I still had the stock at that point. That was an inline 4 though, so it was much quieter at lower RPMs, it wasn't until it really revved to get loud, the GS is super loud right in the midrange though.

GoateeChicken

Aha, thats awful man, get a nice loud exhaust and its too loud for ya now... Sad story,
And yeh, the GS is incredibly loud and amazingly beautiful right at 7-8rpms.

I'm slowly coming around on the noise of a twin. Some of them sound ok to me now, most still just sound like noise. Some day later on in life when I get a bigger bike I'd definitely enjoy a twin. An inline4 is great for a 600 because you're fine revving to get the power, but if I had something as big as a 900-1100, I really can't imagine myself ever riding fast enough to be at 12k rpm with 150hp, that would just be rediculous, so I think I should just get used to the sound. I'd be pretty into riding around on a buell, I think it'd be fun for everything to think a harley is coming by, and you ride up on that thing, but I'd be much more interested in a japanese version. I don't think any of the 4 main companies even make a large naked twin, do they?

Not big sport twins no, you gotta go to a cruiser if you want a big twin, I think the biggest twin the japs put out is a 500, or 650...
:dunno_white:
And they dont really sound like sport bikes !   :technical:

Yeah, that seems kind of weird to me. Each one makes a naked liter bike, either the z1000, 919(not anymore I don't think), fz1(naked ones aren't as common though) and I guess Suzuki is out this year, but for some reason they're all inline 4s tuned for more midrange, although an inline4 tunes for midrange still isn't really a bike made for midrange. Suzuki used to have the SV1000, but that bike went no where. Now it's pretty much just the SV650 or Gladius. Most of them still have, or at least recently had large twins, Suzuki had the TLS/TLR, Honda had the RC51 and the superhawk(I think), I don't remember if the other ones did. Either way, naked bikes usually have 5 year old engines in them anyway. The Z1000 has a late 90s zx-9r engine in it, the fz1 has an old R1 engine in it, so I'm pretty curious why none of them make a larger twin. Even those monster gsx1400 and the cb1400 are both 4 cylinders.

Either way, that's not at all the actual topic of this thread, so I won't keep rambling on, but there's plenty of good engines out there, and I bet if they tried using them, they might do better with that whole market, because half the reason people don't buy them is because they still get compared to the current year's sportbikes, and obviously a bike that's not meant to be a sportbike, with a 5 year old engine, isn't going to seem as good. The SV1000 didn't work out, but that wasn't the engines fault, since that was the best part of that bike. They just went about that bike all wrong. They're never gonna listen to me though, and I can't blame them, since I'm never going to fork over $10,000 for a new motorcycle anyway.

GoateeChicken

Yes, absoutely, I completely agree with that, but consumers are getting more and more concerned of how bikes look differently over last years model, and how much more horsepower they have gained, that I think bikes (twins) are just getting recycled every year due to the lazyness and concern for models that are actually selling (like inline 4's). They slap on a new paint job, add a new bulkier fairing, and give it a bigger gas tank, but just keep recycling the some freaking engine every year. Which really just makes it a 20 year old bike that looks pretty dang nice.   :technical:

But yeh, anyway, I'm thinking of buying a gsxr yoshi slip on, and then finding a way to attach it to my mid-pipe, or making a completely new mid-pipe.
