'92 GS500E - What's a fair price for this bike?

I'm looking to buy my first GS500.  This guy is asking $2000 for a '92 which I think is high, even with the aftermarket exhaust/air filter.  Based on KBB.com, it looks like a fair price should be about half that.  Would $1000 be a fair offer?

Also, owner also says the clutch cover gasket leaks oil and claims it's only $15 to fix.  Is this accurate?

Thanks

he doesn't mention the mileage, but I think $2000 is high.  I'd offer no more than $1250.

Looks nice and clean.. I agree w/ about $1250 But... I sold my 95 for 2K just this spring. It was Imaculate though and had new tires, chain, sprocket, many mods and all removed OEM parts and only like 7K miles

Hit him w/ 1100 and see where it goes  :thumb:

$2000 is way too high.  I recently bought a 93 with 10,XXX miles for $1450 and I still think I may have paid too much.  Remember, there will probably need to be work done on this bike, so that's more money out of your pocket.

I paid $2000 for my low-mile MY2000 GS back when it was a lot newer than a 2000 GS would be today. ;)  Again, good mods are worth some money, so you can decide how much jetting and an exhaust are worth.  GSs need suspension and brake love more, but that's IMO.  And it's always suspicious to me when someone doesn't do an easy fix (replacing a gasket) to say 'needs nothing' in an ad.  Either there's something else wrong, or the seller is just really lazy (not a good sign for maintenance).

I wouldn't offer $1000; a half-off offer isn't going to be received well.  I'd wait for a better deal, or wait for the owner to get no action and drop the price voluntarily.

I sell em from 1300 to 1700 ... the one and only 1700 one had a kat FE.

I have a few comming up that would push the 2K mark.

Kat FE, powdercoated frame on 1, kat FE and GR motor in the other.

It would be funny if you call giving him a grand and he says that's so great, but if you want a bike, you're a grand short and a week late.
I have a few I have done that to. They think they are so smart offering that low with the attitude of helping me out.

In many cases we can let the market take care of the truly over priced crap. If it is over $$, it will sit and rot.

In reality, KBB is garbage it prices them too high ... far too high, if you count in all factors.
A 92 as per Kbb should have 48k miles and they price it at 1000 really ?

I had one wiht 48K miles, I sold it for 675, and I got a deal at that $. Unloaded it on some poor sucker.

@48K it needs a motor rebuilt, at 10K, it got another 38K of running to do. What is that worth to you.

It will either show up later for less money and with a fixed gasket, or not.

"$15 fix" - sure, maybe, if you don't count time. It's a doable fix, but getting the old gasket off is a PITA - search and read all about it.

Offering half price == generally not going to be received well. Either the guy finds a sucker and gets happy, or he doesn't a drops the price, or he doesn't and sticks to the price and it never sells.

KBB is a laugh (on the high side, at least for trucks). NADA is usually closer to reality. For old bikes, condition is everything - there are going to be '92s that are worth $2000, ones worth $1000, ones worth $500 and ones where $500 is a bad deal. The $2000 ones won't be in need of gaskets, seals, etc.

Aftermarket parts - only "worth more" if they match what you would do anyway.
1990 GS500EL - with moderately-ugly paintjob.
1982 XJ650LJ -  off the road for slow repairs

Hey Buddha, when you say have a few comming up, do you mean GS500s for sale?

The Buddha

I do mean GS'es, the GR motor bike should be roaming the streets as I iron out the kinks bynext week.
The powdercoated GS could be a month away ...

The Clutch cover as he may have surmised it was, may actually be the cover where he sees the cabe go into, and it leaking oil may just be chain lube.

Aftermarket parts are worth more only if they match the GSTwin approved list and only if you want that, and only if you dont pay retail for it.

Example wileyco - cost 100 bucks if you got a buddha flange and Dennis krook wileyco. It is a well made pipe with a good look even if a bit bulky ... but the freaking thing was solid. Not chinzty ass tin like Cobra or V&H. Its a gstwin suggested item, and at 100 it may be worth it, but it had a 350 buck retail zinger when you walked in the local stealer ... that $, with my flange will be 400 and definetly not worth it.

You also dont slap a harley exhaust on it and say its worth a 100 ... People usually go, oh yea, he crunched the exhaust pipe and slapped whatever he had lying about.

Nada assumes 3K /yr, so on a 17 year old bike that is 51K, and I sold my 48 k bike for 675, and it had atleast 300 bucks in mods, pipe, jetting, K&N, fork brace, buddha bars, lindemann forks, coated tanks, SS brake lines etc etc.

KBB assumes 5K and 85K on a GS = its dead.

O.C.D.

Got my '92 for $1500 with everything you have on that one.  I had 10,000 on mine though and new tires.  I think I paid to much but in hindsight the mods were worth it.  I say no more than $1500!

I cannot put my finger on that dude's name etc, but I have dealt with a Brian from dallas in the past, maybe he bought something or PM'ed me about something - cant recall. His name+location rings a bell, its very faint, but something is ringing alright.
