To answer the original question, the Aplinestars boots fit true to size in womens.
Like the OP, I'm a cheap college woman and needed boots. I got my SMX-4's for $85 in a size 42. I wear a size 43, but they work. Ankle protection is much more than what has been discussed above, I would know, I've had the 500lb Bandit 600S fall on my leg wearing them. Uncomfortable, but no harm.
