Since Buddha stopped me from unnecessarily pulling my oil pan, I adjusted the fork oil instead.  Glad I did.  Here's pics.

So you added oil in the pictures? What about details? How low were they, how much did you add, what were the results as far as ride etc. etc?

Dude ... this a waste of time ... instead of pulling his pan and wasting a few hours he pulled the fork oil ... whatever. OK fine accompanied by a light clean (which means forks have to be removed and split) and re seal as well as the 15 wt mod it may pass as a mod ... but other wise its a total waste ... fine he now put 15 oil in it. OK great you know it didn't have 15 in it before ? Do we even know what the factory puts in it ?

SUZUKI GS500 Front Fork Oil
How I changed the front fork oil and set the oil level on the 89-09 Suzuki GS500.

  1. Put her on the center stand with a 2x4 shoved under the oil pan to hold the front wheel up.


  2. Took off the handlebars.


  3. Removed fork plugs.


  4. Here are the - plug, spacer, and washer. Short spacer for the progressive spring.


  5. Sucked out nasty brown oily krap. Whatever this junk is, it is can not legally be called oil.
     Level was set to 9" down. That is way too low. That is why it was a loose bouncy lousy ride.


  6. Poured in about a quart of standard 10-40 motor oil between the two forks. Anything is better than the sludge that was in there before.


  7. Set the oil level to 5" down, but this was nut slappingly stiff. Reset the level to about 6". This worked well for me. I'm 200lbs, with the stock rear spring cranked tight.
     This is a syringe and some tubing from a plastics supply called Tap Plastics. You can get the same thing at a medical supply or online for about $5.
     The oil in this pic is the nice clean oil after mixing with whatever was left of the gunk after sucking it all out a week earlier.


  8. Then I finished my beer.

Shhhh scott he already had it ready for pulling the pan ... so that oil goen in the forks. All 3 qt's ... He even put a filter on it.

I dunno guys, I am just very sarcastic today ... in any case fork oil is similar to high detergent motor oil, AKA transmission fluid. What viscosity corresponds to 10W40 ... nothign its single weight, not multi weight. Prolly wont hurt nothing IMHO.
