drive chain adjustment

So I've been noticing that the last couple of rides, the chain is making some noise. I figured I need to clean and lube it, which I did. During that process, I discovered that my chain has more slack than it should. Since light was failing, I put off adjusting it that night.

I've never done a drive chain adjustment so I was reading the instructions. The owner's manual and the Clymer's book both says to place the motorcycle on the side stand to check for slack, then to do the adjustment. Am I really supposed to keep it on the side stand while fiddling with the adjuster nuts? Thanks for any clarifications.

Yes, trust the manual.  The manual is correct.  Keep on side stand.  I did mine on a rear stand (not to be confused with the center stand) and it work but the manual assumes you don't have a rear stand.

if you do it on the center stand it will be too tight on the ground when finished

Thanks for the feedback. I did this last night. Had trouble with adjusting the right side. Axle was not moving back and a gap occurred between the swing arm and plate at the end of the swing arm. Had to put the cycle on the center stand and yanked on tire to move it. Anyway, the bottom line is that the excess slack was taken up and the chain noise is gone.
