If i take apart the carbs to clean them do i have to readjust the float height or will it stay the same as long as i do not mess with it? I did the float height check and they seemed to be good. I also think i need to sync my carbs and clean out my gas tank because i think i see rust. Basically i'm doing all this because my LHS cylinder doesn't seem to be working consistently. also i think i might try to get the inline fuel filter and thinking about upgrading the tank petcock. if i do upgrade the tank petcock upgrade using pingle which is shown in the wiki and related thread the, reserve would have to be accessed by pulling over correct? Do i need any special tools to take apart the carbs for cleaning? Oh and for when i clean the carbs any particular type of glove i should be wearing?

I am going through carb issues myself and done have much time but here is a start.

some answers

float height should not change if you don't change it during the event. IF it already checks out OK you are done. You did examine them that they are not somehow damaged, right?

Yes on synching, it can only help.

Rust = tank work plus filter.  Fine rust will pas through filter. USe filter anyway.

Dont know petcock stuff. Glad I have F model.

Use heavy mechanic glove, might stop the cleaner. Vinyl and Nitrile and Latex thin gloves wont.

Tools- people post elsewhere about removing the cross head screws and replace with allens.

You didnt ask but hold off on the beers till your done. Dont ask why I know this.

I make the worst mistakes when I am sober.

I tightened 2 of the 3 bolts on a savage speedometer mount and snapped them off ... then I clicked my wrench and loosened the third ...
I wont be hammered when working on stuff, but 2 drinks max in a 3-4 hour night ... and a good cold 1/2 beer in me, I am really really sharp. My second is usually red wine.
However I am never seeing anythign new these days ... 16 GS'es ... all 89-00, 6 savages ... 3 virago's etc etc ...
The SV yea I was new to, but I wasn't doing much on it ...

So i was about to start cleaning my carbs today and found that the plug for my left carb to syncronize missing. now i'm guessing that is why my left cyclinder is having problems firing. think i can find a replacement at a car auto parts store?

Well took everything apart and there was a lot of rust sitting at the bottom of the float bowl and just all around. But i think i might have a larger problem than that now.

http://wiki.gstwins.com/index.php?n=Main.Carbs using this exploded view of the carbs i was trying to remove the hose numbered 62 that is connected to the carb through the extrusion that is connected to the main body of the carb assembly broke off  .  so now i don't know what to do. do i need to order a new carb housing? because i don't think i can order just that extrusion. looks like it's made of brass?

PachmanP

You should be able to just order that part.  The fiche basically exists so you can trace the 62 or whatever to the specific suzuki part number.  Go to your favorite parts place and go to the carb fiche, and it should point you to the part number.

Oh thank god. so it's really nothing then. cuz now my carb looks like this picture

There was a an extrusion sticking out between then green circled hole and the right side Philips screw. now there isn't cuz it's broke but if it's nothing than thanks god i've been freaking out about it for the past few hours haha. but i cleaned the carbs. prollie should've ordered new jets but they don't look bad just had to clean all the rust out. gonna install an inline filter for now and hopefully por15 my tank in the near future.

Brass round button ... yes we dril lem out, its the air mix screw cap. However, I believe it was ~1/2 inch to the right of it in that pic.
Post a pic to be sure, 62 in the parts fiche is garbage. The brass cap is also garbage. How is the other carb ... the air screw cap I mean.

Actually my concern is the hole circled in red. on the right side looks just like the picture. on the left side there is a small brass (?) tube that sticks out. and that is what was connected to 62, 63, 64,65. As for the air mixture screws. i have not drilled out the caps on either side yet. And i am trying to find a temporary fix for part 14 until i can order one. Also i have done any tweaking with air mixtures and float height. trying to leave that all as is for right now.

The Buddha

Hole in red ... yea CA sheite.
We yank em, or leave em there .. BS.

BTW these are not your carbs with your hand in the screwdriver I presume ... Kerry's old pic I guess then.

well i put it all back together and at idle left cylinder still have no effect. will order new jets, tap out the mixture screws, and install a less difficult filter and hope for the best. btw i've noticed that only the left carb has the vacuum line coming from the petcock. could that be of any significance?

jeremy_nash

no, the petcock vacuum line is only supposed to attach to the left carb  :thumb:
