I don't know much about dirtbikes, but I've been seeing a ton of hill climbers on craigslist lately, or else I've only been noticing them lately, and they've always been there.

Are they usually just dirtbikes with long wheelbases?

What makes a good dirt tracker? I've seen some races, but not sure too much about those either. Dirtbikes with shorter travel suspension and less knobbie tires?
EDIT: nevermind! just looked into it a little bit. That sounds like more fun that I remembered seeing. When I get home I'm gonna take the brakes off the GS and see if I can find some dirt to slide around on!

Flat trackers are street bikes (harley sportsters and xs's are the norm) and not dirt bikes. Thats why harleys xl's had the right side shift till 77 and bikes have the exhaust on the right side usally, so you can turn left and get the bike real low on the left side. This started out as a "Scrambler" so it was a small street bike with high exhuast and on road off road tires. Hill climbers back in the day were mostly street bikes. Now they are dirt bikes and the big ones are harleys and 4cyl sport bikes in custom frames

Do they have some dirt track races where you're allowed to shift? from what I was reading they're all supposed to have one gear. I'm currently in the market for a small street bike, just something like an old cb125, and I can already tell that any amount of reading or youtubing I go is going to leave me in a big giant empty feel sliding around in circles someday when i have it.
