Sorry, this isn't a GS question but I figure someone here may know the answer.  Kay picked up a '91 Katana 600 for a suspension swap.  I messed with it this evening to see if I could get it to run.  It supposedly had a cracked case but it is actually a hairline crack in a side cover that leaks oil.  I took the float bowls off the carbs to clean them and they look similar to the GS carbs.  There is a large main jet and a small primary jet in each carb but all the primary jets have rubber plugs blocking them off. I checked some online micrfiche and those plugs are factory.  What purpose do they serve?  Why have jets if you are just going to block them?

That's weird... Does it plug off the entire opening under the pilot jets? Or is there enough room for fuel to get around the plug and in to the jets via the screwdriver slots.

Clean the pilot jets ,carb bodies etc thoroughly and reinstall it as you found it.

You thinking  fixing the Kan-o-tuna  up  now or just parting it all after you get the suspension parts you want?

It looks to me like those plugs block off the jets entirely.  I guess that's my confusion, why bother putting jets in a hole if it is going to be blocked off???  Since the plugs were there I put them back together the same way.  The bike fired right up and ran ok so I guess they are working as Suzuki intended.  I'm going to sync the carbs tomorrow on my lunch break and throw the bodywork back on the bike.  I don't know what the Katana's fate will be now.  I thought the engine was going to be trash but all it really needs s a starter cover and a gasket (I just JB welded it for now).  I hate to rob the suspension off a running bike.

I hate killing runners too. Patch and paint the cover...if you do a nice job it'll work fine...Or ebay a replacement.

Sell it now or sit on it til spring....They don't bring big money but they run and ride ok....There's an ass for every seat someone once said.

Is it ugly ( ok ok I know it's a Tuna boat....)- beat up and rashed or pretty straight?

The Kat is in fairly good shape for the age.  My co-workers have been having fun riding it around the parking lot   :D  It was a basket case when I got it and I have yet to see it with the body work on.  Here's a few pics

The body work is taking up the passenger side seat of my truck at the moment

Which matches the GS bodywork in the back seats...

Yahoos at work riding it

The inlet to that pilot jet is via the main jet tube. Its plugged up, much like my virago 535's was, but that dont mean its not flowing. Its got a oblique hole in the wall that sucks it from the main jet flow ... it sorta has the effect of having no pilot at near WFO

well since the Buddha answered the easy question, I make a motion we open the floor for making back seat modding advice.

Ebay the plastics and keep it nekid.  I've always thought the kat's fairings look ridiculous, but that looks pretty sweet nekid.

You also seem to be acquiring bikes far faster than you're losing old ones...:icon_razz:

A kat looks like crap without fairings.
That frame running oblique to the tank etc etc looks dumb.
The 89-96 kat looks best in full fairing properly attached painted in pastel yellow, white with a light sprinkling of midnight blue IMHO. I had one with wave patterns ... man did it look super cool.
All in all a Kat is a BS bike ... its a bigger stepping stone than a GS even if you can believe that.
Beginners buy GS, then they move on to ... well not a kat, if they wander off and fall into the kat trap they quickly jump off it, dust themselves off and get a GSXR.
In the oldays old geezers used to buy kats ... but that is now gone.
Cool.

How about a Bandit?  I found a 2005 1200 and was very interested in t.  A lot of the same stylings as the GS500F, Just naked, and meaner I think.  Seems to be a pretty stout bike,  but still not the output of a comparable FZ1 it seems.
